Exterior
As compared to the standard E-Class, the new Mercedes-AMG E53 Hybrid boasts a sportier design with distinctive AMG styling cues. The front dons a black front grille featuring illuminated vertical slats and AMG branding and an aggressive bumper with large air inlets. The rear showcases a sporty stance with a spoiler lip, diffuser, and dual round double tailpipes. Also part of the kit are AMG-specific skirts, and 19-inch light-alloy wheels (upgradeable to 20- or 21-inch forged wheels).
Engine and performance
Powering the new Mercedes-AMG E 53 hybrid is a 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder engine combined with the electric motor for a total system output of 585 PS and 750 Nm. With the launch control in action, the power output can be further increased to an exhilarating 612 PS. The power is sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed dual-clutch transmission, enabling the car to run from zero to 100 kmph in 3.8 seconds, and hit a top speed of 280 kmph.
The hybrid setup comes mated to a 28.6-kWh battery, which offers an all-electric drive of up to 100km. In pure electric mode, the top speed is capped at 140 kmph. The battery pack operates on a 400 V charging system, allowing for efficient charging with a 60 kW DC fast charger that can juice up the battery from 10% to 80% in approx 20 minutes. Additionally, the vehicle offers various regenerative braking modes, including a one-pedal drive option.
Suspension and braking
The chassis of the vehicle has been fully AMG-optimised with additional bracing on both the front and rear axles for increased rigidity and an 11 mm wider front track width. It also features new twin-chamber suspension dampers that deliver noticeable changes in Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus modes.
The braking system has been also refined to complement the hybrid powertrain's energy recuperation. The front disc brakes feature four-piston fixed callipers, while the rear disc brakes have single-piston floating callipers. The car also has rear-wheel steering, allowing the rear wheels to turn by 2.5 degrees for improved manoeuvrability.
Interior
The 2024 Mercedes-AMG E 53 interior is a blend of luxury, technology, and sporty elegance. The dashboard features hybrid-specific and exclusive AMG displays, including a 12.3-inch driver's display and a 14.4-inch infotainment system, lending the cabin a racier look.
The seats are AMG sport-spec, electrically adjustable, and upholstered in man-made leather with AMG-seat graphics. The Nappa leather-wrapped AMG steering wheel and carbon fibre finish on the central console added to the sporty and luxurious feel of the cabin. Among the other key highlights are illuminated grey open-pore ash wood trim on the door panels and an optional screen for the front passenger.
“The E-Class has been one of our most popular models for decades and we want to build on this with the new E 53 HYBRID. The vehicle offers typical AMG driving pleasure with excellent responsiveness, great driving dynamics, and a sporty design. As a plug-in hybrid, the E 53 HYBRID combines mighty performance with efficiency. Thanks to the high electric range, many everyday journeys can be completed purely electrically. At the same time, the vehicle comes with extensive standard equipment, including fully variable all-wheel drive and active rear-axle steering. In this way, we offer our customers a vehicle that is perfect for their high demands,” said Michael Schiebe, CEO of Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Head of Business Units Mercedes-Benz G-Class & Mercedes-Maybach.
Availability
Set to rival the likes of the Porsche Panamera, BMW M5, and Audi RS7, the deliveries of the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2024 in the US.
