MINI 5 Door

The cabin of the Mini 5-Door Cooper S has been shared with the Mini 3-Door, an expected move that has been a tradition since the last-generation models. The interior has been massively tweaked and has a fine sense of minimalism and new-age tech in its layout.

While there is no functional instrument console behind the new three-spoke multi-functional steering wheel, the Mini 5-Door Cooper S has an all-new centrally-placed 9.4-inch OLED rounded touchscreen infotainment system. This screen also serves as the primary instrument console and an interface for other functions of the car, including dual-zone automatic climate control.

Just below this new-age screen, the Mini 5-Door Cooper S also has a small console for the controls of transmission mode, media and Mini Experience modes. The Mini 5-Door Cooper S comes in a new dual-tone black and blue fabric upholstery with vegan leather inserts while having configurable ambient lighting modes and new-age features like a wireless charger, front-powered seats and head-up display. 

As expected, the Mini 5-Door Cooper S takes many design cues from its three-door counterpart, with a lot based on the all-new J01 Cooper Electric hatchback. While there is a hint of retro appeal in its design, the new Mini 5-Door Cooper S has become sharper in its appearance. 

The front profile of the Mini 5-Door Cooper S has been lifted from the three-door Mini Cooper S, with the rounded headlamps having LED projectors and circular LED DRLs. The grille now looks bolder than before with its octagonal shape, while still having body-coloured treatment. The bonnet also misses out on the hood scoop, and now comes with cleaner lines. Even the front fenders look cleaner than before, due to the omission of faux bonnet vents and side scuttles.

The Mini 5-Door Cooper S looks considerably longer than the three-door Mini Cooper S, thanks to the long wheelbase and the addition of rear doors over the latter. With body cladding and 18-inch alloy wheels gracing its side profile, the Mini 5-Door Cooper S also retains the new triangular Matrix LED tail lamps with the iconic Union Jack-inspired LED inserts within them. Like in the Mini 3-door, there is a thick gloss black strip between the tail lamps, that wears the car’s name.  

In addition to the engine, the platform and suspension setup of the Mini 5-Door Cooper S has also been shared with the three-door Mini Cooper S. The single-joint spring strut front axle and a multiple control arm rear axle of the Mini 5-Door Cooper S are stiffly sprung, which gives it sharp handling and stability. The downside to this setup is the stiff ride quality that comes along with it.  

The 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission from the Mini 3-Door has been opted for its five-door counterpart. In the Mini 5-Door Cooper S, this powertrain claims a maximum power output of 204 PS and a maximum torque output of 300 Nm. 

The plethora of safety features offered in the Mini 5-Door Cooper S  as standard are six airbags, ABS with EBD, dynamic stability control, post crash collision warning with braking function and tyre pressure monitoring system, in addition to driving assistance systems like a rear cross-traffic warning, rear collision prevention, exit warning, park assist, reversing assistance, cruise control with braking function, lane change warning with the active return, high beam assistant and driving assistant plus preparation package that includes active cruise control, lateral parking aid, surround view system, remote 3D view, BMW drive recorder, attentiveness assistant, steering and lane control assistant, speed limit info and automatic speed limit assistant. 

With the addition of rear doors and more space for the rear seat occupants, the new Mini 5-Door Cooper S is undoubtedly more practical than its three-door counterpart. In addition, the performance and driving dynamics of this new five-door Mini aren’t much diluted over the three-door Mini too.
