Subaru teases 2022 WRX ahead of its debut
KUALA LUMPUR: The upcoming 2022 WRX is one of the most awaited Subaru models of the year. And after testing our patience for quite a while, the automaker has confirmed the car’s debut this year. Though we still don’t have an official date in hand, what we do have is a teaser image that gives a glimpse of the sedan design theme.
When compared to the ongoing model the upcoming WRX doesn’t appear much different, as the roofline seems more or less the same. As for changes, a noticeable one includes a revised window line.
Furthermore, the front profile seems to be fitted with a larger grille with the brand logo placed on a single slate. Also, the bonnet scoop appears to be wider than before. The upcoming model is also expected to get wider fenders, quad exhaust tips, and a smaller rear spoiler.
It was during the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show when Subaru previewed the new WRX for the first time via the Viziv Performance Concept. The said concept car looked striking, however, the production version has been changed a lot, which is not a surprising thing for show cars that make it into the mainstream market.
2022 Subaru WRX platform -
The new WRX like the Levorg, Impreza, and Forester will sit on the Subaru Global Platform (SGP) with some alterations in the dimensions. As previously reported, the sedan will measure 4,650 mm in length, 1,805 mm in width, and 1,450 mm in height. The wheelbase stretches as 2,670 mm. Overall, the 2022 model is longer, wider, and taller compared to the ongoing WRX, whose dimensions read (4,595 mm X 1,795 mm X 1,485 mm).
2022 Subaru WRX engine -
The new 2022 WRX is expected to be powered by a 2.4-litre flat-four turbocharged mill, it is the same unit that powers the Ascent. The said mill pumps out a maximum power of 290 PS and a peak torque of 412 Nm, thus representing a significant hike over the current power figures, i.e., 268 PS and 350 Nm from 2.0-litre turbo-four unit.

On the transmission front, the new WRX engine will likely come coupled with a six-speed manual or CVT unit. Also, the Surabu Symmetrical All-wheel Drive system will be a standard offering.
As for the high-performance WRX STI version, it is expected to arrive later with a more aggressive stance, thanks to its body kit and larger rear wing. Reports suggest that it will also be powered by the 2.4-litre flat-four turbo mill that here will be turned to deliver 400 PS and 490 Nm.
That’s all the info we have at the moment on the upcoming Subaru WRX, more is expected to follow soon. So, stay tuned with Zigwheels.my.
