Say bye-bye to the Volvo S90 because the ES90 has arrived

KUALA LUMPUR: Volvo is really stepping up their game, aiming to become a fully electric vehicle (EV) maker by 2030. It seems like they're announcing a new EV almost every month, and the latest buzz is about the ES90.

They're planning to unveil it in 2024 and start selling it in 2025. This new electric sedan dubbed the ES90 is set to be a game-changer, replacing the older S90 model and going head-to-head with competitors like the BMW i5 and Mercedes EQE.

Expectations are high for the ES90. It's rumored to pack a hefty 111 kWh battery (with 107 kWh actually usable), promising a range of up to 600 km on a full charge. Power-wise, we're talking about a massive 640-650 horsepower. It might even share a platform with powerful electric cars like the Geely Galaxy E8 and Zeekr 007.

This isn't just talk – things are moving fast. So, there's this pre-production model of the Volvo ES90, which they're calling the V551, that's just rolled off the line at one of Geely's factories in China – Geely's the big boss company that owns Volvo. Looks like they're gearing up to start making this fancy sedan for real pretty soon.

This rumor hasn’t come out of thin air, because there's this leaked photo that was picked up by Autocar showing the production crew in Zhejiang, China, hanging out in the factory with some signs that say "Volvo Cars V551 First VP Car Celebration" and "Confidential Top Secret". Looks like someone spilled the beans!

Design-wise, the ES90 is expected to follow the same lines as the compact Volvo EX30 crossover, but it's actually closer in size to the larger Volvo EX90. We're talking about a pretty big sedan, almost 5 meters long and 1.95 meters wide.

The full details on the ES90 are still under wraps, but we should get the complete scoop around the middle of this year when it officially debuts.

The future in Malaysia is heading towards a time when Volvo will only have electric vehicles in its lineup. As it stands now, the T5 models, which were purely internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, are no longer on offer.

The current range is branded with the 'Recharge' tag, signaling that these engines are combined with electric power. The last time a Volvo S90 was available in a T5 variant was back in 2021, coinciding with a facelift for the S90. However, this model has since quietly vanished from the lineup.
