Mercedes-Benz introduced three plug-in hybrid models
KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-Benz has introduced three plug-in hybrid cars. These are variants of the W247 B-Class, W177 A-Class Hatchback, and V177 A-Class Sedan. All three PHEVs are parked under Mercedes EQ Power label. While the B-Class PHEV is designated ‘B 250 E’, the A-Class is called ‘A 250 E’.
All the three models get identical PHEV mill, it consists of an M282 1.3-litre 4-cylinder turbo petrol engine that churns out a maximum power of 160 PS at 5,500 rpm along with a peak torque of 250 Nm at 1,620 rpm. The powertrain works alongside a 75 kW electric motor which is integrated with an 8-speed 8F-DCT dual-clutch gearbox. The total system output is 218 PS and 405 Nm.
A 15.6 kWh, 150 kg water-cooled lithium battery powers the electric motor and is located underneath the rear seats. This placement causes a very little reduction in boot capacity when compared to non-PHEV models. The battery can be charged via an AC charger and Type 2 connection, and the company claims that the battery can be charged from 10 to 100 percent in just 1 hr 45 mins using a 7.4 kW wall box. A DC charging option is also available via CCS Combo 2 connection where 10 to 80 percent charge is achieved in 25 min.
The top speed of all models is up to 140 kmph when running on electric mode alone. Following the NEDC regulation, the range varies from 70 to 77 km, however, following the WLTP one lies between 56-69 km.
Talking about each model individually, the A 250 e sedan covers the 0 to 100 kmph run in 6.7 seconds and has a top speed of 240 kmph. The A 250 hatchback accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph a second earlier than its sedan counterpart (6.6 seconds) but has a lower speed of 235 kmph. The B 250 e takes 6.8 seconds to go from 0 to 100 kmph and its top speed is 235 kmph.
All the three models have a combined fuel economy of between 1.4 to 1.6-litre per kilometer, 14.7 to 15.4 kWh per 100 km is the electric consumption. The CO2 emission rests at around 32 to 26 grams per kilometer.
The EQ Power compact models with the PHEV powertrain gain Battery and Electric Level drive modes for the system. Other drive modes included are Sport, Comfort, and Eco, and there will be a pre-entry climate control function accessible through a smartphone.
One can also locate nearby charging stations via the Mercedes-Benz User Experience system and with the Mercedes me Charge, the owner access to over 300 different charging operators in Europe.
