Meet the Mercedes-Maybach S680 powered by mighty V12
KUALA LUMPUR: Around the world, strict regulations and laws are forcing automakers to downsize the engine capacities and move towards electrification. But, it seems like the German premium auto giant Mercedes-Benz wants to hold its big V12 as long as possible. It recently unveiled a new Maybach model that is powered by the venerable twelve-cylinder engine, called the Mercedes-Maybach S680 S-Class.
Just like its V8 cousin, the V12 Maybach S-Class also gets a refined styling, a unique grille, restyled front bumper, dual-tone paint finish, and enough chrome accents here and there, which lends it a more premium appeal as compared to the standard model. The Bentley Flying Spur and Rolls-Royce Ghost competitor also carries an 'S680' badge on the boot indicating that it is powered by a V12 mill.
The 6.0-litre V12 twin-turbo monstrous engine produces a maximum power output of 630 PS and a whooping torque of 1,001 Nm. It is coupled with a nine-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system as standard fitment. The mechanical setup of the massive sedan is rear-biased and thus it sends 69% of the torque to the rear wheels.
Performance-wise, the sedan can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just 4.4 seconds, before clocking an electronically limited top speed of 209 kmph.
Moving in, the plush cabin of the Maybach S680 S-Class is decked up with Nappa leather covering the dashboard, headliner, window frames as well as pillars. Other premium accents are designed wood trim, diamond quilting, and contrast piping.
Unlike the regular sedans, the Maybach S680 rear compartment gives a feel of a private jet with reclining seats and leg rests and an MBUX entertainment system with two 11.6-inch displays. Almost everything is power operated, including the rear doors that are controlled from the driver's seat. The rear sunshades and panoramic sliding sunroof can be deployed by just waving a hand. Furthermore, any surface can be cooled, heated, or can be used to give massages. Also on offer is silver-plated champagne flutes and a fridge.
This epitome of luxury is slated to hit the US showrooms in the first half of 2022 with a hefty premium over the regular model.
