BMW i7 has arrived; get to know the first electric 7 Series better via pictures
The past few days have been amazing for the global automotive market. We have seen the debut of two of the most-awaited, innovative, and futuristic cars, the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and the BMW i7. The former came a day earlier than the latter and has gripped the market ever since. We have discussed the EQS SUV in detail in our previous story; you can check here. For now, our guest of honor is the all-new BMW i7.
BMW recently introduced the 7th gen 7 Series sedan (which will be discussed in detail in a separate article) that includes several variants, including a pure-electric unit, the i7. So, unlike the Mercedes-Benz EQS, which is a separate model altogether in the company's line-up, the i7 is part of the 7 Series sedan range.
Let's now get to the BMW's most luxurious EV yet a little better -
The BMW i7 is a pure treat to the eyes. The EV makes a striking impression from each and every angle. For instance, at the front, the car's illuminated kidney grille and headlight design are among many of its visionary design features. Here we'd like to elaborate on the lighting units, called the Crystal Headlights; they have been precisely crafted with the most exclusive crystal glass.
The EVs side profile is no less. It reflects a clean, refined, and modern aesthetic via the flush window design, which also enhances aerodynamics and eliminates undesired noise.
The car's rear displays a powerful stance with the sleek tail light and bumper design. If you are wondering why the enormous BMW badge? Well, it covers up the pop-up washer jet for the rearview camera.
Differentiating the i7 from the 7 Series from the outside are the blue accents that can be seen on the EVs exterior here and there and the 'i' logo on the grille.
The i7 gets no special platform like the EQS, which is built on a dedicated EV layout. Keeping things simple and sorted, the BMW i7 shared its platform with the regular 7 Series range, so the same Cluster Architecture (CLAR). From the beginning, the CLAR was developed to accommodate a variety of powertrains, be it a normal combustion engine, a plug-in hybrid unit, a mild hybrid, or a fully-electric motor setup.
Underpinning the same platform translates to the same dimensions. All the 7 Series variants measure the same; however, compared to the previous-gen 7 Series, the new model is 130 mm longer, 48 mm wider, and 51 mm taller.
The i7 cabin remains mostly similar to the 7 Series. However, the headroom-enhancing three-box design makes it less sleek than the EQS or Tesla Model S. Meaning the i7 range is less than its competitors (around 160 km less than the Mercedes EQS).
The BMW i7 has been created keeping in mind the busy lifestyle of its owners, and so the brand has made extra efforts to create a super relaxing environment inside. Offering a lounge-like experience is the rear seat with ventilation, heating, and massage function. Also, the large Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof is no less than a work of art; it gets graphic design, dynamic LED control, customisable colours, and brighter light intensity.
The new 31-inch BMW Theater Screen offers passengers a blissful cinematic experience. It comes integrated with 5G connectivity via Personal eSim, Amazon Fire TV compatibility, up to 8k resolution, and a high-end sound system.
The all-new dashboard design, Curved Display, and the BMW Interaction Bar look super impressive and intriguing. The latter offers both ambient and dynamic illumination with controls for air vents, glove compartment, and more.
The i7 is designed to offer the utmost comfort and personalisation. Its advanced technology adapts to the owner's preferences with every drive. Experience next-level personalisation and customizable layouts with the iDrive 8 Operating System and all-new Curved Display. Further making sure you always arrive in style, it comes with a stunning exterior light welcome experience and Automatic Doors.
Stay informed and entertained with the i7 as its cockpit is a nexus of the most seamlessly advanced technology. It includes the latest iDrive 8 Operating System, wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto, adjustable My Mode settings, and Intelligent Personal Assistant.
The i7 comes with a Driving Assistance Professional Package that keeps one calm, centered, and safe. Features like Highway Assistance provide hands-free driving options.
BMW Charging is a comprehensive program for BMW EVs that offer tailored charging solutions. The i7 comes equipped with a Flexible Fast Charger (a portable device that delivers optimised charging everywhere), 0 to 100 percent in under 12 hrs at 240V outlet.
Also, part of the kit is BMW Wallbox, a Level 2 charger that can be installed in one's garage or outside for quick charging. Full charge is achieved in 12 hours.
Lastly, public charging is always an option.
The i7 is offered in two variant options. An xDrive 60 variant with two e-motors making 570 hp with an official range of 590-624 km on WLTP test cycle. BMW claims a 0-100 kmph sprint time of 4.7 seconds and a top speed of 239 kmph. Next up is a more powerful M70 xDrive variant making 605 hp.
