It was on the 15th of December 2021 that Mercedes-Benz Malaysia officially introduced the all-new 2022 S-Class in the local market, thus ending 2021 on a big note. The brand’s flagship model is introduced in its seventh generation and is offered in one variant out of the total seven options available globally.
So, let’s get started to know the new Malaysia-spec Mercedes-Benz S-Class in detail via images -
As mentioned above, Mercedes-Benz is offering the S-Class in only one variant option in Malaysia. It is the one you see above and is called the S 580 e plug-in hybrid.
Being the brand’s flagship sedan, the S-Class is destined for a long car (as can be seen in the image above). On the specs sheet the car reads 5,179 mm in length, 1,921 mm in width, and 1,503 mm in height. Thus making it slightly larger than the previous-gen model, i.e., 54 mm longer, 22 mm wider, and 10 mm in height.
The best part, however, is despite the enhanced dimensions the does not experience any weight gain. Actually, the new car is around 60 kg lighter, thanks to the use of aluminum for its structure.
There is no doubt about the S-Class pioneering design that includes superior aesthetics and a luxurious feeling of spaciousness in ideal harmony. The front end exudes character and style with the super stylish DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps with bear arrow-shaped LED daytime running lights and indicators. The Malaysian-spec model gets Digital Light LED headlights with 1.3 million micro-mirrors delivering 2.6 million pixels of resolution. It can even adjust the beam to as per the topography (based on the navigation data).
The next bit that catches our attention is the massive grille. Some might like it while others don’t but it surely gives the car plenty of visual appeal.
Moving on to the side profile, the car showcases a clean, smooth look. Aiding to the seamless look are the pop-up door handles and a slightly reduced character line that's been brought closer to the window line. Not to forget the wheels, the car rides on 19-inch multi-twin-spoke alloys wrapped in 255/45 profile tyres.
The rear gets two-piece triangular tail lights with chrome trim linking the lighting units to further broaden the car visually.
The inside of the car is a treat in itself. A lot of rework is done
and it all makes the dashboard look clutter-free. For instance, the air-con vents, we have two vertical slots on both ends and four horizontal vents on top of the central touchscreen unit.
A bit that catches the eye instantly is the 12.8-inch OLED portrait display that comes with a resolution of 1,888x1,728 pixels. The car benefits from MBUX multimedia system, it comes equipped with augmented reality navigation and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto connectivity.
Another screen on the front is the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster with a three-dimensional effect that works by tracking the driver's eye using stereo cameras.
For the rear passengers, we have an MBUX high-end rear entertainment system with twin 11-inch screens, two wireless headrests along with a full-fledged 7.0-inch Android tablet (yes, it blocks the rear centre armrest).
The audio duties here are taken care of by a Burmester 3D surround sound system with 16 speakers and 760 watts of amplification.
The S-Class is a luxurious car and so comes loaded with several features. For instance, the MBUX Interior Assistant uses cameras in the overhead control panel and the system learns algorithms. It recognises the occupant's intention and performs a suitable action.
Adding to the car's premium look and feel are its Nappa leather for steering and upholstery, black crystal centre console, and an anthracite open-pore poplar wood trim.
The rear is no short of luxe as well. It gets redesigned seats with a flowing three-dimensional design. The multi-contour units are electrically-adjustable with heating, cooling, and calf massage function. Not to forget, the rear headrest comes with a built-in neck warmer.
The new S-Class is powered by a 3.0-litre straight-six turbo engine making a maximum power of 362 hp from 5,500 to 6,100 rpm along with a peak torque of 500 Nm from 1,600 to 4,500 rpm. Being a plug-in hybrid car, it has a 147 hp/ 440 Nm e-motor. The combined system output is rated at 502 hp and 750 Nm.
The power is sent to the wheels via a nine-speed 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox.
On the performance front, the car touches the century mark in 5.2 seconds and can attain a top speed of 250 kmph.
Time to discuss the S 580 e's safety and driver assistance kit. The car benefits from a Driving Assistance package that includes autonomous emergency braking with improved cross-traffic and pedestrian detection, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. Also, the car comes equipped with 14 airbags.
Overall, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a pretty impressive car and in Malaysia, it will be offered in one variant option with no other variant coming in near future. Price? Well, Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has not disclosed the sedan’s price tag yet, but it will surely cost more than the previous-gen model that retailed for RM 659K.
