2020 Bentley Flying Spur hits showrooms, priced at RM840k
KUALA LUMPUR: While Bentley has been taking pre-orders for a couple of months now, the third-gen Flying Spur is finally in the country. Displayed at the Bentley’s Kaula Lumpur showroom at Jalan Pinang, it will be here until March, hosting previews for the customers. It is referred to as the ultimate luxury grand touring sedan by the company. Let’s find out what makes it so.
The 2020 Flying Spur is a mix of modern craftsmanship and performance. While its contemporary design is capable of making your jaw drop, its intuitive technology is good to keep you connected with the car and world around you.
Talking about the design, the third-gen Flying Spur gets a sculpted look on the outside featuring cut-crystal effect headlamps, a new vertical vane matrix grille and an optional illuminating Flying B mascot at the front. The sides are accentuated with the presence of twin 10-spoke 21-inch bright painted wheels.
The wheelbase is now 130 mm longer than before at 3,194 mm. The exterior surfaces are a result of aluminium superforming, first seen on the Continental GT. The company claims that it has best-in-class body stiffness.
Inside the cabin, the luxuries are endless, including flip-down vanity mirrors, mini-fridge, panoramic glass roof, rear-seat entertainment screens, rotating central display and HD 12.3-inch touchscreen. A dedicated screen button is present for bringing out the Flying B mascot on the grille. Along with this, you get to choose from the three analogue gauges or a “digital detox” wood veneer.
That’s not enough, the seats inside the cabin get a new twin-flute design and come with functionalities like multi-mode massage, ventilation, heating, adjustable bolsters and top tilt. There is an optional Mulliner Driving Specification that includes 3D leather with diamond quilting, embroidery and stitching. The doors get the world’s first 3D leather diamond-quilted design.
For entertainment needs, Bentley offers three audio systems, including standard 650-Watt system with 10 speakers, next is the 1500-Watt Bang & Olufsen system with 16 speakers, illuminated grilles and BeoSonic. Finally, there is a 2200-Watt Naim with 19 speakers and front seats integrated Active Bass Transducers. There is a Touch Screen Remote for controlling things like mood lighting, rear seat massage function, blinds, climate control and the Flying B mascot.
Powering the latest Flying Spur is the hand-built W12 6.0-litre twin-turbo engine, which is claimed to be the most advanced twelve-cylinder engine in the world. It is capable of churning out a max power of 635 PS and a peak torque of 900 Nm. it can clock to 100 Kmph from zero is just 3.8 seconds before attaining its top speed of 333 kmph.
Torque distribution is dynamic on the Flying Spur based on the chosen Drive Dynamics Mode. In Bentley and Comfort modes, 480 Nm of torque is transferred to the front axle, whereas in the Sport mode, the amount of torque delivered to the front axle is limited to 280 Nm. This is done to maintain a higher torque level at the rear axle for a dynamic experience.
The 2020 Flying Spur becomes the first-ever Bentley to get the electronic all-wheel steering which improves manoeuvrability in crowded places and stability at expressways. At high speeds, all four wheels move in the same direction, whereas at low speeds, the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, which reduces turning radius and grants an effect of shortened wheelbase.
For braking, it gets large 420mm discs just like the latest Continental GT. Bentley has improved the Dynamic Ride System for better handling and ride comfort. The stiffness of the anti-roll bar is managed on-demand for keeping the saloon level and fight cornering forces.
On the safety front, it gets intelligent systems like local hazard information, smart LED matrix headlamps, pedestrian warning, top-view camera, traffic sign recognition and an optional night vision camera.
There are plenty of personalization options too, including two exclusive wheel finish choices, 15 cabin leather hides with dual-tone options, eight single veneers with an optional chrome pinstripe and seven dual-tone veneers. Overall, with the standard palette of 17 shades, you can widen the choices up to 30 shades while working with the available extended range.
The 2020 Flying Spur is priced at RM840,000 (excluding taxes and Malaysian duties).
