2019 Volvo S60 - All you need to know

The posh and suave world of luxury D-segment sedans has never been more popular and well-spread than what it is right now. While many car buyers these days are swaying towards luxury models in the highly prolific ‘crossover SUV’ category, the days of the good old luxury sedan isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Proof of that pudding, of late, has presented itself in the form of the all-new 2019 Volvo S60.

Now while the S60 has been around since 2000, the latest third-generation avatar of this well-liked Swede is now officially available for purchase in Malaysia. Underneath, the 2019 S60 sedan is based on the brand’s Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform - one it shares with its bigger siblings such as the S90 and XC90. However, things won’t be very easy for the S60 as this segment is rife with stiff competition.

As of now, the 2019 Volvo S60 is only available in one variant - the T8 R-Design. Volvo Malaysia is bunching a 5-year/120,000-kilometre warranty, with a service interval of 20,000 kilometres. Buyers can choose from one of five colours which come in the form of Birch Light, Crystal White, Fusion Red, Onyx Black and Pebble Grey.

 

As for its aforementioned competition in the market, rivalry comes from cars such as the Audi A4, BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Jaguar XE.

Exterior

Like other modern-day Volvos, the design of the all-new 2019 S60 really sets it apart from its predecessor -- even allowing the sedan to possess a sense of uniqueness and charm that few of its rivals can boast about. On top of that, the S60 sold in our country is wearing its sportiest R-Design outfit which only makes its design even more eye-catching.

The front end of the 2019 Volvo S60 features the Swedish marque’s signature grille, sleek headlamps with their flashy Thor’s hammer-styled LED DRLs, sporty-looking bumper with gloss black finish and large air intakes. The long bonnet leads to a steeply-raked windshield, prominent gloss black wing mirrors & window surrounds, flared fenders accompanied by stylish 19-inch wheels, strong shoulder line, and a charging port located right behind the front-left fender.

The rear of the sedan looks even more vivid, with its glorious LED tail lamps, sporty boot-lid design, and a chiselled bumper that integrates a dual-exhaust setup, subtle diffuser, and plenty of gloss black for added contrast. In keeping with its ‘luxury car’ moniker, the cabin of the new S60 doesn’t just rope in a satisfying but sporty aura but also feels truly upmarket, contemporary and driver-oriented.

Build quality and overall fit-and-finish is top-notch, while the seats are absolutely sublime - typically Volvo. At the same time, space in the back is plenty decent and the seats just as good. However, while the design looks smart and fashionable, the piano black trim is quick to gather fingerprints, smudges and dust. On the other hand, the textured metallic trim, stitched leather and knurled controls look fancy yet remain very functional.

Firstly, you read that right. The 2019 Volvo S60 T8 R-Design is rated at an impressive 50 kmpl - courtesy of its efficient plug-in hybrid powertrain. The 11.6 kWh battery pack allows the S60 a maximum driving range of around 50 kilometres on electric power alone.
And to help harness its combined output of over 400 horsepower and 640 Nm of torque,

the S60 T8 R-Design is equipped with all-wheel-drive and an Aisin-sourced 8-speed automatic gearbox as standard. Mashing the throttle propels this two-tonne luxury sedan from naught to 100 kmph in just 4.4 seconds and onto a top speed of 250 kmph.

In conclusion

The 2019 Volvo S60, specifically in its T8 R-Design avatar, is a fantastic car. It’s well-made, extremely safe, superbly comfortable, decidedly fast, and is packed with several modern features & amenities. Volvo S60 price is just under RM 300,000, the S60 T8 R-Design may not be the most conventional pick in its class but given its strengths, it presents a great case for itself.
