Sym Bonus 110 SR Review 2024
The Taiwanese giant has been eyeing a greater share in the Malaysian motorcycle market for a long time. Their approach of catering to the lower end of the price list has been pretty successful so far. The Sym Bonus 110 SR is the more stylish variant of its brother the Bonus E 110. As opposed to the E Bonus it comes equipped with alloy wheels instead of spoked ones and also has a disc brake in the front. Sym tries to make the bike more appealing towards the youth by giving it some stylish graphics as well as bright color options. The bike recently got a style upgrade in 2017 and now comes in an even more stylish package. The underbone has a tough job of going toe-to-toe against the Honda Wave Alpha, the Modenas Kriss MR2 and the Honda EX5 Fi. The low price of RM 3,975 (against the Sym E Bonus’ RM 2972) gives it a very big lead.
Sym Bonus 110 SR Design
The underbone got a styling overhaul in 2017 and comes with a lot of new cosmetic changes. The front has a curvaceous halogen headlight sharing space with the handlebars. There are newly designed rear view mirrors in black. The apron houses huge clear triangular turning indicators with a honeycomb grille in the center. The front apron curves around and extends to the rest of the bike. The body is draped in new checkered flag graphics, giving it striking presence. The rear gets a prominent single piece grab rail. Below that is a sharp tail light combined with indicators. There is a newly designed exhaust with a new sporty muffler cover and a new chain cover. Finally there is a new chain guard and foldable footrests on the front. The bike rides on stylish 17 inch cast alloy 5 spoke wheels. It is 1920 mm long, 680 mm wide and 1100 mm tall. Instrumentation is basic and analog with a speedometer, odometer as well as fuel gauge readouts. There are three bright and youthful color options on offer – red, blue and yellow.
Bonus 110 SR Ride & Handling
There are telescopic forks in the front and red colored dual shock absorbers connected to the swingarm in the rear. The seat is narrow but serves its purpose well. The riding position is upright and comfortable. The handlebars are high and the seat is flat. There is decent ground clearance and travel from the suspension. The ride is comfortable and the tires are grippy if the bike is not pushed too hard.
Sym Bonus 110 SR Engine & Fuel Consumption
The 96 kg lightweight bike is powered by an air cooled 108 cc single cylinder SOHC engine. Peak power output is rated at 7.1 hp at 7500 rpm and peak torque comes to be 7.45 Nm at 5500 rpm. The transmission uses a rotary 4 speed manual gearbox but there is no manual clutch - which would have made the bike sportier - only an automatic centrifugal clutch. The bike can reach speeds of up to 90 kmph. But for bikes like this, the bigger focus is mileage. The fuel economy figure is claimed to be 55 kmpl by the company which is very respectable. The fuel tank is decent for the segment at 4 litres. This gives the bike a range of around 200 km. The bike comes with both a kick and an electric starter.
Bonus 110 SR Braking & Safety
A single disc at the front and drum brake at the rear are attached to the 17-inch alloy wheels to bring the vehicle to a halt. The inclusion of a front disc brake has increased the braking efficiency of the Bonus 110 SR. There aren’t any additional safety features like an anti-theft key shutter over the key slot.
Sym Bonus 110 SR Verdict
The biggest USP of this bike is its extremely competitive price. The Honda Wave Alpha comes to be more than RM 1000 more expensive than this. But price is not everything. Sym has not had the best record with quality and this is not likely to be any better. But if you are looking to buy this bike then you probably already know this. It is a very good bike for the price. It will drive nicely, look good, give decent fuel economy and will be relatively easy to live with. But that’s about it. Manage your expectations and you will not be disappointed.
