Toyota to bring the new GR Corolla by 2023

KUALA LUMPUR: The Japanese automaker will bring the new GR Corolla hot hatch in 2023 powered by the same three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine as seen on the GR Yaris, according to a fresh report by AutoExpress UK. by doing this, the company aims to build a reputation of producing fun-driving cars.

The Japanese GR Yaris underpins a powerful 1.6-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine, which is also the world’s most powerful three-cylinder power mill, that produces a max power of 272 PS, mated to a 6-speed manual gearbox. At the moment, it is unclear that the GR Corolla will also come with the same performance. Even though the GR Corolla hatch comes with a de-tuned version of the aforementioned engine, it will still be good for 254 PS of power.

Underneath, the GR Corolla will have a multi-link suspension for the comfortable driving experience. It is also likely that the new GR Corolla will come out as an all-rounder rather than a performance-focused hatch.

Toyota also plans to introduce pure electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid models by the end of 2025. This can be a thoughtful move after considering the fact that GR products didn’t get enough traction from the audience. Moreover, the company will also introduce the new C-HR crossover in three years time.

Johan van Zyl, Toyota’s European CEO and President while talking with Auto Express said that the GR Yaris is not a volume contributor but when added to the mix it helps in positioning the cars.

The chief engineer of the GR Yaris, Naohiko Saito, in talks with CarsGuide earlier said, “it’s wasting time to use a four-wheel-drive system and this 1.6-litre engine [for one car>. Personally, I’d like to use this powertrain for each of the other [GR> models.”

The GR Corolla, when launched, is expected to challenge the likes of the Hyundai i30 N and the Ford Focus ST.
