Sales Report: Proton Malaysia’s performance in April 2022

KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Malaysia recently announced its April 2022 sales performance figures, and the report shows a 32.3 percent drop compared to the previous month. The reason? Well, Proton Malaysia blames it all on the ongoing global chip shortage that is hampering the supply chain of carmakers worldwide.

Coming down to figures, in the month of April, Proton sold a total of 8,839 cars, including both domestic and export. Compared to last year's same period, it shows a 41.1 percent drop. The automaker’s market share also dropped from 18.6 percent in March to 15.6 percent in April.

It is, however, to be noted that the year-to-date market share remains the same at 17 percent. Thus retaining its second-best-selling auto brand position in Malaysia.

Proton Edar CEO Roslan Abdullah said, “After two years of pandemic-affected sales, Malaysia’s automotive market continues to show strong growth potential in 2022, as evidenced by the long waiting list for new car deliveries.” He further added, “Proton is also trying to catch up to market demand, but we also must acknowledge being the most affected by chip supply issues.”

Major contributors in Proton April 2022 sales -

Proton Saga	4,579 units
Proton X50	1,554 units
Proton X70	1,530 units
Proton Exora	301 units.

Compared to last year, Saga continues to be the primary contributor and its year-to-date sales come down to 14,028. Also, it is the ongoing model's last sales, as Proton will unveil the 2022 Saga soon; i.e., on May 12, 2022.

The X50, X70, and Exora continue to lead their respective segments, i.e., B-segment SUV, C-segment SUV, and C-segment MPV.

Pakistan	456 units
Egypt	172 units
Brunei	138 units

On a monthly basis Proton's exports have fallen sharply; the year-to-date figure represents a strong image with a 109.7 percent hike over 2021.

As for the semiconductor shortage issue, Roslan has assured the customers of a ‘quick turnaround in coming months as the automaker has secured its supply. Addressing the issue, he said, “The situation is still uncertain for the rest of the year, and the global car industry is under pressure from rising costs, but the company is working on countermeasures against these issues to ensure our customers get the best products and value in Malaysia and abroad.”
