Saga & X70 help Proton sell over 11,000 units in December 2019
KUALA LUMPUR: While many criticised it, the event of Proton joining hands with Geely has well and truly turned the tables around and changed the fate of the Malaysian automaker. The arrival of the Proton X70 laid down a new pathway towards success for the automobile manufacturer, and Proton continues to walk on the same. With the year 2019 coming to an end, the in-house manufacturer has reported that it managed to sell 100,821 units in 2019. The figure included both domestic sales and exports. Moreover, it was an increase of 55.7% compared to 2018 and the first time since 2015 when Proton sold over 100,00 units.
In December 2019 alone, Proton sold 11,117 units, quite a lot more than the 9,643 trades it witnessed in November 2019. Thanks to the high sales figures, Proton grabbed a 16.7% market share during 2019, which is another highest since 2014. Proton had reported selling 89,066 units until November 2019, and the total figure for 2019 should be 100,183 vehicles. Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA) had already confirmed that the data revealed by Proton matched its data for the sales in October & November 2019. With that said, Proton crossing 100,000 sales should be no bluff either.
"The X70 and the Saga are two major ingredients to Proton’s sales success this year. We are humbled by the popularity of the X70 and would like to say a big thank you to all our customers for their support, despite it being a brand new market segment for the company. As for the Saga, with over 41,000 bookings and counting, it remains our core product and a popular choice regardless of a buyer’s age, status and purchasing power, making it a car for all Malaysians", said Li Chunrong, the Proton CEO.
The Proton Iriz and Exora saw an increase of 97% and 40% in their annual sales, respectively. To no surprise, the Proton Saga remained the best-selling model for the automaker with 38,144 sales throughout 2019. In December 2019 itself, the Proton Saga found 3,892 new homes. With 26,331, it was then the Proton X70 at the second spot. The Proton Persona grabbed the third spot with 21,876 sales in 2019.
