Ora Good Cat to launch soon; available for a test drive

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ora Good Cat is one of Malaysia’s highly-anticipated cars. For a while now we have been hearing about its arrival but never got a concrete date. No need to get excited, as we still don’t have the Good Cat’s launch date, however, the automaker offering test drives of the EV is a sure indicator of a pretty soon arrival.

Tagged as the cheapest EV in Malaysia, the Ora Good Cat surely doesn’t feel cheap. Once launched, it will provide even middle-class Malaysians with the much-needed electric car ownership experience.

It was in early July 2022 that Great Wall Motors (GWM) officially entered the Malaysian market. It is a privately owned Chinese company manufacturing electric vehicles. It is one of the eight largest auto manufacturers in China and owns several brands like Tank, Ora, and Haval.

The Ora Good Cat will be GWM’s first offering in the local market and is built to target electric car buyers on a budget. Speaking of pricing, the upcoming EV is expected to cost somewhere close to RM 150K. Affordable, right!

Here’s what we know about the upcoming Good Cat EV -

• In Malaysia, we’ll get the EV in four trim options namely Tech, Pro, Ultra, and Ultra G
• In terms of design, the upcoming Ora looks a lot like the now-retired VW Beetle
• The four-door car offers enough cabin space for five adults
• It's super easy to park, thanks to its compact body which measures 4235 mm in length, 1825 mm in width, and 1596 mm in height. For a bit of a perspective, it is wider and taller than the Nissan Leaf

• The wheelbase stretches to 2650 mm and ground clearance sits at 120 mm
• The EV runs on 18-inch wheels wrapped in 215/50 tyres
• The car’s specs sheet includes several cabin comforting and connectivity options like a modern instrument cluster, chunky multi-function steering wheel, air-con vents running along the dashboard’s length, and toggle air-con switches

• Powering the EV is an e-motor making 143 PS of power and 210 Nm of torque
• The drive is sent to the front wheels
• On the performance front, the EV offers a range of about 500 km and a top speed of 152 km
• Like any other EV, this one too offers a pretty simple gear selection with reverse, neutral, and drive options which the driver can select via a rotary knob
• Taking care of the suspension duty at the front is McPherson and Torsion Beam at the rear
