Ora Good Cat EV: Top rivals in Malaysia

Great Wall Motors has made a grand entry in Malaysia with an aim to become an xEV leader in the country. The very first model of the Chinese automaker on sale in the local market is the Ora Good Cat, which will be followed by nine other models in the next three years. In today’s article, we will be discussing the Ora Good Cat competitors in detail. But before that, let’s check out the EV’s variants and key specifications.

The Good Cat is offered in two variants here - 400 Pro and 500 Ultra. Priced at RM 139,800, the base spec version comes equipped with a 143 hp/210 Nm electric motor fed by a 47.8-kWh battery pack. The EV cruises up to 400 km (on the NEDC cycle) on a single charge. The range-topping 500 Ultra, on the other hand, is priced at RM 169,800. It equips the same motor coupled with a bigger 63.1-kWh battery unit offering an NEDC-claimed range of 500 km.

The Ora Good Cat measures 4,235 mm in length, 1,825 mm in width, and 1,596 mm in height, and spans a 2,650 mm long wheelbase. Equipment kit comprises smart LED headlights, a full-width LED tail light bar, 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable side mirrors, a 7.0-inch digital driver display, 10.25-inch infotainment unit, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, 360-degree surround-view monitor, wireless charging, electronic parking brake with auto hold, power-adjustable driver seat, automatic climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, and several advanced driver assistance systems.

BYD Atto 3

Besides GWM, another Chinese automaker that has recently marked its entry into the Malaysian automotive arena is BYD. It has the Atto 3 electric SUV on offer in two trims - Standard Range and Extended Range. Pricing starts at RM 149,800 and goes all the way up to RM 167,800.

Powering the Atto 3 Standard Range is a single electric motor generating 201 hp and 310 Nm of peak torque. The motor is backed by a 49.92-kWh battery pack, which offers a WLTP-claimed driving range of 345 km. On the contrary, the Extended Range comes equipped with a bigger 60.48-kWh unit allowing the EV to run for 420 km on a single charge.

The BYD Atto 3 is 4,455 mm long, 2,050 mm wide, 1,615 mm tall with a wheelbase measuring 2,720 mm. The EV’s features list includes adaptive LED headlights, LED daytime running lights. electronic unlock tailgate, panoramic sunroof, LED tail lights, electrically heated and adjustable side mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels (17-inch as standard), 12.8-inch rotatable infotainment unit, wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, 5-inch digital instrument cluster, automatic single-zone air conditioning, power-adjustable front seats, ambient lighting, 8-speaker DIRAC HD Sound System, wireless phone charger, synthetic leather upholstery and a slew of advanced safety gears.

Hyundai Kona Electric

Another affordable EV that rivals the likes of the Ora Good Cat is the Hyundai Kona Electric. This Korean electric SUV is offered in three trims - e-lite, e-plus, and e-max. The e-lite and e-plus retail at RM 156,538 and RM 176,838, respectively with a 136 hp/395 Nm electric motor and 39.2 kWh battery setup under the skin, which lets it run for 305 km on a single charge. The range-topping Kona e-Max costs RM 208,348 for a 484 km range backed by a 64 kWh unit.

Against the measuring tape, the Kona Electric is 4,180 mm long, 1,800 mm wide, and 1,570 mm tall and spans a 2,600 mm long wheelbase. It comes kitted with LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED tail lights, a blacked-out roof, an 8.0-inch touchscreen head unit, wireless Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto support, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, head-up display, single-zone climate control, wireless charging, powered front seats, leather upholstery, remote start, paddle shifters, and a number of driver-assistance bits. 

Nissan Leaf

One of the earliest affordable EVs available in Malaysia, the Nissan Leaf also runs in this race with a single variant on sale. Priced at RM 175,800, the Japanese EV comes equipped with an electric motor generating 150 PS of maximum power and a 40-kWh battery package offering a cruising range of 311 km. 

Size-wise, the Nissan Leaf measures 4480 mm in length, 1540 mm in height, 1790 mm in width, and has a wheelbase of 2,690 mm. In terms of features, it comes with LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, 17-inch alloy rims, a 7.0-inch driver display, a 5.0-inch infotainment unit, automatic air-conditioning, and Nissan’s Safety Shield 360-degree suite. 

Renault Zoe

The Renault Zoe also stands against the Ora Good Cat on the battlefield. It is offered in two trims - Zen R110 and Intens R135. Priced at RM 163,000, the Zen R110 is fitted with a 110 PS/225 Nm electric motor and a 52-kWh battery pack providing a driving range of 386 - 395 km. The Intens R135 retails at RM 175,000 and comes powered by the same battery and a more powerful motor churning out 135 PS and 245 Nm.

In terms of size, the cute Zoe measures 4087 mm in length, 1945 mm in width, 1562 mm in height, and spans a wheelbase of 2500 mm. Equipment kit consists of Pure Vision full-LED headlamps, 16-inch alloy rims, a 7.0-inch touchscreen head unit, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, a 10-inch TFT instrument console, automatic climate control, leather-cloth combination upholstery, reverse camera, several safety systems.
