New Fifth-Generation Land Rover Discovery All Set to Make Global Debut in 2016

Kuala Lumpur: After auctioning the unique 2 millionth defender for RM 2,585,000 (£400,000) at an eminent charity auction at Bonhams, Jaguar Land Rover is all set to launch its fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery in 2016. According to a recent Autocar report, the British automaker is currently working on the final development stages of the new seven-seater SUV, which is also going to be the “range-topper” of the new Land Rover Discovery line-up comprising, at least, three models. The information was confirmed by the Design Director of the Land Rover, Gerry McGovern at recently concluded Los Angeles Motor Show. The Discovery Sport model which was unveiled at the 2015 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), will also be a member of the new Land Rover Discovery lineup.

The design of the fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery is greatly inspired by the Discovery Vision Concept of the Land Rover, which was unveiled last year at the New York Auto Show. The automaker is mainly aimed at making a sleeker and sporty SUV while maintaining the versatility of the existing discovery model. Also, the new discovery model will be lighter than its existing model and will be equipped with many advanced technologies like remote-controlled parking system, laser scanning system etc.

The 2016 Land Rover Discovery will be built on the automaker's PLA (Premium Light Generation) platform which is made up of aluminium in order to make the new Discovery model lighter than its existing model. The powertrain of the new seven-seater SUV will comprise an upgraded 3.0-liter SDV6 diesel engine for the UK and European markets while a mild hybrid 4-cylinder hybrid Ingenium motor is expected to come later.

After making the Global debut in 2016, the fifth-generation Land Rover Discovery will go into production at the Jaguar Land Rover's Solihull plant, which also produces Range Rover and the Range Rover Sport.
