Not only might this seem like the future of the Mazda 6, but the debut marks the brand's ongoing efforts to keep up with electrification without losing sight of its core identity, such as delivering vehicles that are engaging to drive with clean design.

If you feel like you’ve seen this vehicle before, well that’s because it’s essentially the European version of the Mazda EZ-6, which debuted in China at the 2024 Beijing Auto Show.

It’s a product made from a collaboration between Mazda and its Chinese partner, Changan Automobile Co., Ltd., leveraging Changan’s expertise in electrification and smart cabin technologies while staying true to Mazda’s hallmark qualities.

The car’s “Authentic Modern” design language focuses on clean lines and a coupe-like silhouette. While the overall styling might not reinvent the wheel, it’s distinctively Mazda, with an emphasis on flowing forms that combine understated elegance with EV novelty.

Mazda’s goal with the 6e is to deliver what it calls Jinba Ittai—a phrase synonymous with its ethos of creating a seamless connection between car and driver.

This translates into meticulous tuning of the car’s braking and handling, promising precise, linear responses to every driver input. Whether it achieves that claim remains to be seen, but the intent is clear: Mazda doesn’t want the 6e to feel like just another EV.

Under the Hood—or, Rather, the Battery Pack

The Mazda6e comes with two battery options: 80kWh and 68.8kWh, which translate to WLTP ranges of 552km and 479km, respectively. While those figures are competitive, they aren’t groundbreaking in a market where 600km ranges are becoming the benchmark for higher-end EVs.

Although the Mazda sedan is an electric vehicle, the Hiroshima based auto manufacturer still focuses on driving dynamics, which may give the 6e an edge over other, tailor made for buyers and drivers who prioritise driving experience over pure range anxiety.

Its dimensions also position it as a solid contender in the midsize sedan segment. At 4,921mm long, 1,890mm wide, and with a wheelbase of 2,895mm, it offers a spacious interior without feeling like an oversized EV.

Mazda hasn’t skimped on tech on the 6e. The 6e features an intelligent drive system under its body aimed at improving safety and convenience, with accident mitigation technology baked in.

On the inside, the cabin includes features such as voice, touch, and gesture controls, signaling Mazda’s intentions to make drivers’s interactions with the car as intuitive as possible.

While these features aren’t revolutionary, they bring the Mazda6e in line with what’s expected from modern EVs.

    Mazda’s Vision for Electrification

Mazda CEO’s statement ties it all together: “Mazda will continue to pursue the ‘Joy of Driving’ under our core Human Centric value, and aim to deliver the 'Joy of Living' by creating moving experiences in our customers' daily lives.”

It’s a bold ambition, but the reality for Mazda is that they’re stepping into an increasingly crowded and competitive EV market.

The Mazda6e will need more than just good looks and smooth handling to make a dent.

For now, though, it represents a step forward for a brand determined not to lose its soul in the shift to electrification. Whether it’s enough, only time will tell.
