Land Rover Defender gets world’s first dual eSIM connectivity
KUALA LUMPUR: Consumer Electronics Show has always been a home of innovations and tech in the consumer electronics industry. This year’s CES is no exception. Land Rover showcased the world’s first dual eSIM connectivity feature in its newest Defender at the 2020 CES.
And just as we enter 2020, you’d realize that the infotainment system fitted inside your car is now outdated. The infotainment system fitted into the Defender is powered by two Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 Am Automotive Platforms. Each of the units gets their Snapdragon X12 modem. This enables the Defender to not only download Software Over The Air (SOTA) easily but also download updates that in the background.
Positioned at the centre of the dash, the Pivi Pro touchscreen infotainment system is the best in the industry, comes with LTE models and some of its electronic hardware is even shared with a few smartphones. It measures 10 inches and comes with a high-resolution display. Aside from this, it lets you connect two devices at once. This means not only the driver but the passenger can also enjoy hands-free functionality.
Currently on display at the 2020 CES, the Land Rover Defender 110 is priced at £45,240 (RM 241,306approx) in the UK. It is also touted as the vehicle with a supercomputer brain.
Peter Virk, the director of connected car and future technology at Jaguar Land Rover said, “With one LTE modem and eSIM dedicated to the Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) technology and the same set-up looking after music streaming and apps, new Defender has the digital capacity to keep customers connected, updated and entertained at all times anywhere in the world. You could liken the design to a brain, with each half enjoying its own connection for unrivalled and uninterrupted service. Like the brain, one side of the system looks after logical functions, like SOTA, while the other takes care of more creative tasks.”
