Jeep teases 2021 Wangler 4xe plug-in hybrid

KUALA LUMPUR: Jeep, on its official YouTube channel, posted a 15-second video that shows a car exploring the rough-wild terrains in near-complete silence. The vehicle in question is a Wrangler plug-in hybrid variant, called the 4xe. It has been regarded as the first-ever Wrangler capable of driving without a pinch of petrol for relatively short distances.

In the video, we see a bit of the car and horses, later more than the former, making a few things clear. First, it will be a powerful car, displaying significant horsepower, and secondly, it would be a silent car that’ll even take on the roughest terrain without much noise. A few seconds into the teaser video, Jeep also states that the car is so quiet that ‘it won’t disturb nap time’. It seems like Jeep is getting a little petrified of all the attention the all-new Ford Bronco is receiving, and the teaser is a means to come back in the spotlight.

Though the Wrangler 4xe didn’t reveal itself entirely in the video, we know how it looks. How? That’s because, at the 2020 Consumer Electronics Show (CES), it made its first official public debut. The subtle blue accents spread all-over its body help differentiate it with the non-electrified Wrangler version. The charging port is integrated at the base of the A-pillar (driver’s side). Also, CES 2020 displayed Wrangler was a Rubicon version that retained its ‘trail-rated’ badge, therefore going hybrid hasn’t interfered with it off-road prowess.

Though Jeep has not shared any technical or mechanical information, we expect the plug-in hybrid technology in Wrangler to be similar to the one in Chrysler Pacific. If that’s the case, Jeep’s new off-roader will be powered by the tried and tested 3.6-litre V6 unit with a pair of electric motors plus a small lithium-ion battery pack. An electric-only range of 48 km with a full charge is also expected.

As for its price tag, it is believed that the Wrangler 4xe will be the most expensive variant in the model lineup. As per sources, Jeep will unveil the Wangler 4xe in upcoming months, and it’ll reach customers by 2021.
