Ford Mondeo to be introduced in 2021
KUALA LUMPUR: Ford Mondeo is not going anywhere and it is likely to be launched next year. This comes to light after an auto magazine named Autocar spotted a specialist tool for a “2022 model year Mondeo CD542” in parts tooling catalogue on Ford’s European website which is responsible for removing the rear leaf spring.
The model code, CD542 was assigned to the replacement for the Ford Fusion in North America, that is Mondeo, not in the direct sense though. The release date of the tool in the document reveals that the model will be introduced in the second half of 2021. Well, according to the tool’s purpose, it can also be inferred that the new Mondeo will come with a transverse leaf spring rear axle like the one on the Volvo XC90.
Improved battery packaging is likely to happen in the Mondeo hybrid or plug-in hybrid due to the leaf spring design. Currently, the drivetrain batteries fitted inside these models require a lot of space.
Last year, a few spy shots of the development mule grabbed attention that showed the Mondeo with a raised suspension and extended wheelbase, based on the Ford Focus and Active Estate. The B-pillar looked extended probably to fit the model’s new platform. It was evident back then that it’s not an SUV and will continue to be offered with estate and hatchback body styles.
In the US, this new Mondeo is widely compared to the Subaru Outback, which is a popular estate car.
