First BMW iX hits East Malaysia with the start of new BMW i Charging facility

KUALA LUMPUR: Yesterday, we told you about the opening of two new BMW i Charging stations in Rawang by BMW Group Malaysia and dealer partner Millennium Welt. And today, we heard about the inauguration of one more new BMW i Charging DC fast charging facility that coincides with the arrival of the first BMW iX in East Malaysia.

The new facility is located at the Regas Premium Auto Kuching showroom, which is the only authorised dealership of BMW cars in Sarawak. The charging station was officiated by Dato Sri Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Chief Minister and Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government of Sarawak. 

Being one of the two DC fast chargers available in East Malaysia, the new BMW i Charging facility can charge the EVs at speeds of up to 180 kW.

Speaking about the BMW iX, the automaker introduced the EV in Malaysia last year in August. It is priced at RM 356,987 (on-the-road without insurance) in the state. The price excludes import and excise duties as well as 50% sales and service tax.

Upon launching the new charging facility, Hans de Visser, managing director of BMW Group Malaysia stated, “2022 will be a momentous year for us at BMW Group Malaysia as we gear towards an electrified offensive that will transform the local automotive landscape to one that is electrifying and sustainable. As such, it is important that we continue working closely with all our stakeholders, especially our dealers, to ensure that essential charging infrastructures are in place to accelerate this shift across the country.”

The arrival of the all-electric BMW iX is also timely as customer interest and appreciation for electrified vehicles steadily rise in East Malaysia,” said Jolene Tay, marketing manager of Regas Premium Auto.

“This development of better infrastructure to accelerate the uptake of electromobility amongst motorists in Sarawak is a move that we warmly welcome from all stakeholders in the industry,” said Datuk Sri Sim Kui Hian.
