  • The automaker has conducted an exhaustive internal review and has recalled 600 units of the Omoda 5, collaborating closely with the Ministry of Transport (MOT) to ensure all affected vehicles are rectified to uphold stringent safety standards.

Lee Wen Hsiang, Vice President of Chery Auto Malaysia, emphasized the company's commitment to safety, stating, "Chery Auto Malaysia is committed to providing safe and reliable transportation solutions, and we are dedicated to ensuring that all our vehicles meet the highest safety standards."

In line with this commitment, Chery Auto Malaysia voluntarily arranged a meeting to brief the Ministry of Transport (MOT) on the current product inspection status and the root cause involving the Omoda 5 axle incident.

The issue was traced back to a component fault during a factory upgrade, where a worn welding tip was replaced, leading to equipment miscalibration. "As a direct result, the automaker says that there are a total of 60 units of Omoda 5 vehicles with the affected parts in Malaysia, produced on 15 August 2023," said Chery Malaysia.

To prevent further issues, Chery Auto Malaysia has expanded the inspection to include vehicles with rear axles produced from August 14 to 17, 2023.

Lee further commented, “Chery Auto Malaysia views this matter most seriously as customer safety is our utmost priority. We are in the process of reaching out to customers of the affected Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) to request them to bring their vehicle to our authorised service centres for a detailed inspection.”

Additionally, Chery Auto Malaysia has established a dedicated webpage where Omoda 5 owners can verify whether their vehicles are implicated by entering their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). The company ensures that its service centers and technicians are fully equipped to address and resolve these concerns efficiently.

As of May 3, 2024, the automaker has successfully reached out to over half of the affected vehicle owners. Chery Auto Malaysia plans to continue these efforts, providing weekly updates to keep all stakeholders informed of the progress of this recall campaign.

The company expresses its gratitude towards its customers for their patience and understanding, as well as the MOT for its support and guidance during this process.

Following the recent incident of rear axle failure in a Chery Omoda 5, the Road Transport Department (JPJ) has also taken action. The department has called on Chery Corporate Malaysia for a comprehensive investigation and to provide further details on the issue.

JPJ has also issued a recall for 600 units of the Omoda 5 starting May 3. Owners of the affected vehicles will be contacted by Chery Corporate Malaysia to schedule inspection appointments. Additionally, owners have the option to visit any service center nationwide for the same purpose, according to JPJ.

JPJ has assured that all faulty components identified during the inspection will be replaced at no cost to the vehicle owners, with all expenses covered by Chery Corporate Malaysia.
