5-star safety rating for GWM Ora Funky Cat EV

KUALA LUMPUR: Chinese automaker's GWM latest fully-electric hatchback gained a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP! In the future, similar results are expected to follow from the ANCAP test.

In case the name Funky Cat doesn’t ring a bell, then maybe Good Cat will. Both the cars are the same, just different names for different markets.

Coming to the Chinese electric hatch safety results, the car scored the following rating across Euro NCAP’s tests -

Adult occupant protection	92%
Child occupant protection	83%
Vulnerable road user protection	74%
Safety assist	93%

Here’s a list of GWM Ora Funky Cat/Good Cat safety equipment -

• Autonomous emergency braking (both forward & reverse along with pedestrian & cyclist detection)

According to Euro NCAP, “The Funky Cat’s autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system performed well in tests of its reaction to other vehicles, with collisions avoided or mitigated in most test scenarios. A seatbelt reminder system is fitted as standard to the front and rear seats and the car is equipped with a system to detect driver fatigue and distraction. The lane support system gently corrects the vehicle’s path if it is drifting out of lane, and also intervenes in some more critical situations. The speed assistance system detects the local speed limit and the driver can choose to allow the maximum speed of the car to be automatically set by the system.”

During the Euro NCAP safety test following key observations were made by the authorities -

• During the frontal offset test, the passenger compartment remained stable. Along with good protection for driver and passengers' knees and femurs
• The protection of all critical body areas was good in the side barrier test, the same goes for the more severe side pole impact
• In the event of rear-end collision, the front seats and head restraints demonstrated good protection
• All critical body parts of a 10-year dummy were protected during a frontal offset
• Protection for all critical body areas was good in the side barriers test for the child dummies
• The bumper offered good protection to pedestrians' leg and pelvis region
• The electric hatchback’s autonomous emergency braking system performed well in the tests
• The lane support system, speed assistance system and seat belt reminder system worked perfectly well

It was only in March this year that GWM introduced the Ora Good Cat in the European market. The UK-spec model with a 48 kWh battery claimed a driving range of 310 km (WLTP test cycle). Driving the hatchback is a front-mounted e-motor pumping 126 kW of power and 250 Nm of torque. The above specifications allow the EV to complete the century sprint in just 8.3 seconds.

Other inclusions are a bespoke electric-only architecture, MacPherson strut at the front, torsion-beam suspension at the rear, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, a 10.25-inch instrument panel, 228-litre boot space (858-litre with rear seat folded), and more.

Other cars to score a five-star safety rating in the Euro NCAP safety test include - the Tesla Model Y, Kia Niro, Genesis GV60, and GWM Wet Coffee 01.
