2024 W214 Mercedes-Benz E-Class launched in Malaysia - From RM356k, 2variants, 2.0-litre ICE and PHEV, up to 313PS/550Nm

KUALA LUMPUR: Mercedes-Benz Malaysia has introduced the sixth-generation E-Class, setting a new fresh outlook for the luxury sedans in the country. As one of the final internal combustion engine (ICE) models before Mercedes-Benz transitions to a somewhat electrified lineup, this latest E-Class blends modern design and cutting-edge technology with the brand's renowned elegance and refinement.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • How many variants for the new W214 E-Class?

    2, E200 and E350e
  • Is the E350e a plug-in-hybrid?

Yes, featuring the same engine as the E200 but with an electric motor
  • What kind of power figures are we seeing?

    E200 features 204PS and 320Nm while the E350e features up to 313PS and 550nm
  • The launch sees the arrival of two highly anticipated variants, the E200 and E350e, each catering to different segments of the market while maintaining the premium experience expected from Mercedes-Benz. The E350e interestingly has similar specifications as the global E300e model, but for the region it’s named E350e.

To be made available in Malaysian showrooms starting today, the E-Class continues to be the epitome of contemporary luxury. The E200, a mild-hybrid (MHEV) option, and the E350e, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) model, represent a harmonious blend of performance and sustainability, allowing customers to choose between a more traditional petrol-powered driving experience and a more eco-conscious hybrid alternative.

In terms of size, the new E-Class has grown compared to its predecessor, with an overall length of 4,949 mm and a width of 1,880 mm. Its longer wheelbase, now stretched to 2,961 mm, ensures more rear passenger comfort, offering more interior space while still maintaining a sleek, dynamic exterior profile. The trunk capacity of 540 liters further underscores its practicality for everyday use.

On the outside, the sixth-gen E-Class bridges the gap between Mercedes-Benz’s existing ICE lineup and its fully electric EQ models. This is evident in its striking design features, such as the bold new radiator grille laced with three pointed stars and a sleek black panel that seamlessly connects the grille together. Unfortunately for the Malaysian market, there’s no illuminated grille, which might actually be a blessing as some have found it a bit too much.

The car’s aerodynamics have also been finely tuned, achieving a drag coefficient of just 0.23, underscoring its efficiency. Combined with the extended wheelbase, and great turning radius by up to 900 mm, the newly launched E-Class makes for a nimble city vehicle despite its increased size.

Inside, the E-Class impresses with an array of state-of-the-art features. It introduces the Digital Vehicle Key system, compatible with iPhone and Apple Watch, allowing up to 16 individuals to share access to the vehicle. Mercedes-Benz has also equipped the cabin with the new MBUX Superscreen, which supports popular applications such as TikTok, Zoom, Angry Birds, and Webex.

A conference camera mounted on the dashboard of the E350e enables video calls while on the move, a feature that speaks to the car’s adaptability in the digital age. The cabin also features Mercedes’ signature blend of luxurious materials, including open-pore wood in dark ash and metal-mix materials, while the Burmester surround sound system and Active Ambient Lighting with sound visualization further enhance the driving experience.

Powering the E200 is a 1,999 cc inline-4 turbocharged engine, generating 204 PS and 320 Nm of torque. This engine is paired with a 23-hp boost from the integrated starter generator (ISG), providing additional torque when needed. The result is a brisk 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of 7.5 seconds and a top speed of 240 km/h.

The E350e, meanwhile, combines the same 1,999 cc engine with an electric motor, producing a total system output of 313 PS and 550 Nm of torque. This PHEV variant delivers a strong performance, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.4 seconds, with a top speed of 236 km/h. Both models come with the smooth-shifting 9G-Tronic automatic transmission, ensuring a refined driving experience.

Safety, a cornerstone of the Mercedes-Benz brand, remains paramount in the new E-Class. The sedan is equipped with an extensive suite of advanced driver assistance systems, including Evasive Steering Assist, Autonomous Emergency Braking, and adaptive cruise control with stop and go, among others.

These technologies work in tandem to provide the driver with a secure and comfortable journey, even in the most challenging driving conditions. The inclusion of the brand’s PRE-SAFE system further enhances occupant protection in the event of a collision.

The W214 E-Class from the get go is locally assembled in Malaysia at Mercedes' plant in Pekan . The factory has long been known for its cutting-edge production techniques, ensuring the highest levels of quality for every Mercedes that rolls off the assembly line.

In conclusion, the launch of the new Mercedes-Benz E-Class in Malaysia brings a fresh and forward-thinking approach to the luxury sedan segment. Whether buyers opt for the dynamic E200 or the efficient and powerful E350e, they are sure to experience a perfect blend of innovative technology, comfort, and Mercedes-Benz’s hallmark driving experience.

As the brand moves closer to its electric future, the sixth-gen E-Class represents a final celebration of its rich ICE heritage, setting the stage for what’s to come.
