2023 Toyota Vios grabs 5-star ASEAN NCAP rating
KUALA LUMPUR: The all-new 2023 Toyota Vios has passed the ASEAN NCAP (New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries) crash tests with flying colours. The B-segment sedan received a 5-star rating under the more comprehensive 2021-2025 assessment protocol.

The new Vios that underwent ASEAN NCAP assessment was the Malaysia-spec G variant. It comes equipped with six airbags, Electronic Stability Control, Anti-lock Braking System, Seat Belt Reminder System (for frontal and rear seats), and Pedestrian Protection technology as standard.
Additionally, the sedan also features safety assist technologies such as Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Detection (on both sides), and Auto High Beam.
ASEAN NCAP confirms that the safety rating awarded to the Malaysian-made Vios applies to other variants of the sedan offered in Thailand, Brunei, Indonesia, Laos, and Cambodia.
A few months back, a report by Toyota’s subsidiary Daihatsu highlighted a procedural irregularity in the testing of four cars, including the Vios. However, shortly after it, UMW Toyota issued an official statement on the matter and confirmed that the Vios is safe for driving as it meets the required UN-R95 certification. Well, the ASEAN NCAP safety rating reassures the high safety standards and quality of the sedan.
The Vios comes in two variants in Malaysia - E and G, priced at RM 89,600 and RM 96,000, respectively. Both trims come equipped with a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated Dual-VVT-i engine capable of generating 106 PS of maximum power and 138 Nm of peak torque. The power is sent to the wheels via a new CVT gearbox.
