2022 Proton Saga: Which variant to buy

2022 Proton Saga: Which variant to buy

Earlier this year in May, Proton Malaysia launched the all-new Saga facelift, making it the second set of revisions received by the third-generation sedan. Compared to the previous facelift, this one seems to be a smaller update, however, there is still a new sporty variant, revised dashboard, and an enhanced kit.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • In how many variants does Proton offers the Saga sedan?

Proton Saga’s line-up includes - Standard MT, Standard AT, Premium AT, and Premium S AT.
  • In how many engine options is the new Saga available in Malaysia?

All five Proton Saga variants are powered by a 95PS/120Nm 1.3-litre 4-cylinder in-line, 16V, DOHC, VVT engine.
  • Also, it was only recently that the automaker added a new Standard Lite AT variant to the model lineup. This one joins the Saga’s initial range that includes - Standard MT, Standard AT, Premium AT, and Premium S AT.

Overall, the 2022 Proton Saga is offered in five variant options in total which makes it difficult for a customer to choose. In this article, we’ll be discussing all five Saga variants in detail, thus making it a little easier for a prospective buyer.

If the price point is not an issue, then customers can decide on the basis of other factors like performance, efficiency, feature, and more.

Conclusion: All Saga variants share the same basic dimension, with only differences seen in the wheels and weight front which we don’t think can help make a buying decision.

    2022 Proton Saga: Engine

All five Proton Saga variants are powered by a 1332cc 4-cylinder in-line, 16V, DOHC, VVT engine generating maximum power of 95 PS at 5,750 rpm along with a peak torque of 120 Nm at 4,000 rpm. The drive is sent to the wheels either via a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.

Conclusion: All trims get the same engine configuration, making it a not-so-good deciding factor.

2022 Proton Saga: Braking & Suspension

Helping the sedan stop is the ventilated disc at the front and the torsion beam at the rear. A smooth ride, on the other hand, is Saga’s pretty capable suspension setup that includes MacPherson Strut with a stabilizer beam at the front and a torsion beam at the rear.

Conclusion: All trims get the same braking & riding configuration, making it a not-so-good deciding factor.

    2022 Proton Saga: Exterior Features

The base Standard MT, Standard Liet AT, and Standard AT models get halogen reflector headlights, power-adjustable ORVMs with manual fold, wing mirror turn signals, bee sting antenna, and remote trunk release. The only difference is the wheels while all get 14-inches, however, the former is in steel and the other in alloy.

The Premium AT comes equipped with halogen headlights, LED daytime running lights, electronic door mirrors with turn signal lamps, a trunk spoiler, and a remote trunk release.

Over and above the Premium AT specs list, the range-topping Premium S AT model gets electric ORVM with an auto fold along with front & side skirtings.

Conclusion: The sedan’s exterior specs kit mainly differs between the Standard and Premium trims. So, the customers can lay their hands on the model they think comes with a feature of choice.

    2022 Proton Saga: Interior

The base Standard MT, Standard Liet AT, and Standard AT models come equipped with the following features on the inside. Part of the list is - a urethane steering wheel with tilt adjustment, LCD multi-info display, ECO drive assist, keyless entry via remote control, power windows, fabric upholstery, driver seat height adjuster, air-conditioning with N95 cabin filter, and a 12V power socket.

The Premium AT model packs a urethane steering wheel with audio & hands-free telephone switches & tilt adjustment, LCD multi-info display, ECO drive assist, keyless remote, power window, fabric upholstery, driver seat height adjuster, luggage lamp, air-conditioning with N95 cabin filter, and a 12V power socket.

The range-topping Saga model in addition to the Premium AT equipment list gets intelligent entry with the push start button and power windows with driver side auto down function. Also, instead of plain fabric, it gets a semi-leatherette with fabric seat material.

Conclusion: It is quite clear from above, that the Premium trims offer more features than the Standard ones. But again it all comes at an additional cost.

    2022 Proton Saga: Connectivity

The base Standard MT, Standard Liet AT, and Standard AT models come fitted with a standard audio infotainment head unit, Bluetooth connectivity, two speakers, and one USB port. The latter also gets two charging ports.

Both Premium AT and Premium S AT come equipped with a 7-inch touchscreen monitor with Android Auto (iOS for S AT model), smartphone connectivity, Bluetooth connectivity, two speakers (4 in S AT), and one data and two charging ports.

Only the range-topping Saga comes with a reminder before leaving the vehicle function.

Concussion: One sees a clear difference between the Saga variants' cabin features, thus letting customers pick the trim with the features they find useful.

    2022 Proton Saga: Safety

The Standard MT and Standard Lite AT variants safety kit include - two SRS airbags, rear seat ISOFIX & top tether anchorage, an anti-lock braking system, electronic brake distribution, brake assist, and two rear parking sensors.

The Standard AT variant safety bag adds a few features like electronic stability control, traction control, and traction control system.

As for the two Premium trims, they get a reverse camera and two front parking sensors as additional features.

Conclusion: As one moves higher on the Saga variant list, the safety & security profile of the car gets stronger.

So, which Saga variant should a buyer choose? Well, the only major difference between the sedan trims concerns its safety, connectivity & comfort features, with a few exterior bits. Everything else is the same, thus making it pretty easy for a buyer to put the money on the model that best satisfies the need.
