2022 Honda Civic: Variants explained

Honda Malaysia has been teasing us with the new Civic e:HEV RS for a month now and finally launched the model yesterday. The hybrid model is offered in the RS version and occupies the top stop in the 11th gen Civic lineup.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • In how many variants is the new Civic offered in Malaysia?

Honda Malaysia offers the Civic sedan in four trims - E, V, RS, and e:HEV RS.
  • In how many engine options is the Civic offered?

Honda Civic is available in two engine options - 1.5L and 2.0L with an e-motor.
  • With the launch of the new Civic hybrid model, the total variant number for the market-leading C-segment sedan comes down to four namely - 1.5L E, 1.5L V, 1.5L RS, and e:HEV 2.0L RS.

Thus making it difficult or shall we say a bit confusing for the customer to choose between the Civic variants. In this article, we’ll be discussing each and every Civic model in detail, helping the end-user to decide which one best fits their needs.

    Engine

All Honda Civic variants except the range-topping hybrid model are powered by a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder, 16-valve, DOHC VTEC turbo engine. The mill generates a maximum power of 182 PS at 6,000 rpm along with a peak torque of 240 Nm from 1,700 to 4,500 rpm. The drive is sent to the wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

As for the all-new Civic e:HEV RS variant, it gets the bigger 2.0-litre 4-cylinder, 16-valve, DOHC unit along with an e-motor. The former generates 143 PS at 6,000 and 189 Nm at 4,500 rpm of torque and the motor makes 184 PS from 5,000 to 6,000 and 315 Nm from 0 to 2000 rpm. Unlike its siblings, the setup here is paired with an electric continuously variable transmission (e-CVT) unit.

    Performance

All three non-hybrid Civic models (E, V, & RS) accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 8.3, 8.4, and 8.5 seconds respectively. They can achieve an impressive top speed of 200 kmph.

As for the new Civic e:HEV RS variant, it touches the 100 kmph mark in just 7.9 seconds and attains a top speed of 180 kmph.

    Breaking & Suspension

What remains common between the Civic variants is the braking and suspension setup that offers impressive stopping power and smooth drive.

The sedan gets ventilated disc at the front and a solid disc at the rear. Also, part of the list is an electronic parking brake.

A smooth drive all along is assured by a MacPherson Strut at the front and multi Link at the rear.

    Exterior

The Civic is a stylish car with a dominating road presence. Its new, exhilarating design DNA not only helps the car stand out but also leads the segment.

The standard kit includes - LED headlights auto function, LED DRLs, ORVM with indicators, and LED tail lights. The only thing extra the Civic 1.5L V gets is LED fog lights.

As for the RS and e:HEV RS models they are the only ones to come equipped with a trunk spoiler and tailpipe chrome finisher.

    Cabin amenities

The Honda Civic provides a super comforting cocoon to the driver and passengers. The sedan offers several great controls to the driver that make the journey fun and relaxed. Part of the car’s standard kit is - remote engine start, walk away auto lock, smart entry with push start button, cruise control, ECON button, single auto air-conditioning system, rear air-con ventilation, smart clear wiper, multi-function steering wheel with audio control, auto-retractable ORVM, LED front roof ambient light, two rear USB charger.

To this list, the 1.5L V model adds a paddle shift, SPORT button, auto-dim rearview mirror, and 8-way driver power seat.

The RS further adds an auto front wiper, sport pedal pad type, front footlight, and front door ambient light.

The range-topping hybrid model exclusively comes with a wireless charger, active noise control with active sound control, a deceleration selector paddle, and a key card.

    Connectivity

Like all its cars, Honda offers best-in-class connectivity in the Civic sedan as well. The best part is most of the features remain common.

The car’s standard features include - a 7-inch audio system, Apple CarPlay & Android Auto support, one USB port, a hands-free telephone, four speakers, and Bluetooth.

Variants above the base Civic 1.5L E get wireless Apple CarPlay connectivity, two USB ports, and eight speakers.

    Safety

Honda Civic puts forward a pretty strong safety shield which includes a bunch of standard features. The list includes - dual front airbags, side airbags, side curtain airbags, seatbelt reminder, ISOFIX, auto door lock, agile handle assist, vehicle stability assist, anti-lock braking system, auto brake hold, electronic brake distribution, hill start assist, emergency stop signal. Front sensor, reverse sensors, reverse camera, driver attention monitor, and security alarm with immobilizer.

Honda also offers the sedan with its popular Honda SENSING kit of driver assistance features like - Lane Departure Warning, Road Departure Mitigation, Lane Keep System, Forward Collision Warning, Auto High Beam, Collision Mitigation Braking System, Lead Car Departure Notification System, Low-Speed Follow, and Adaptive Cruise Control.

The only features the base Civic trim misses out on are Honda LaneWatch Camera and Honda CONNECT.

    Conclusion

Honda Civic is offered in four trim options and they share a lot of features in common, except for a few. Therefore customers can pick one depending on the features they want over the standard kit.
