2021 Honda City Hatchback: What we know so far

Honda Malaysia has been teasing the City Hatchback for a long time now and recently the automaker opened the order books. As for the most recent update, Honda Malaysia previewed the City Hatchback at the Sepang International Circuit.

    At the recent preview, we got a good look at two of the City hatch variants the V and RS e:HEV which we’ll be discussing in detail in this article. So, let’s get started -

    Compared to the sedan version, the hatch comes with a slight increase in torsional rigidity. Designers have used more sound-deadening materials that improve the car’s NVH levels.

    Also, the pre-production units previewed showed bare rear wheel wells, so we are not sure whether or not they’ll make it to the production unit.

    The City hatch RS model showcases an exterior similar to its sedan counterpart. It gets full LED headlights, gloss black Solid Wing grille with honeycomb inserts, LED fog lights, faux carbon-fibre front lip, blue-accented Honda logo, black side mirror caps, and RS badge at the front and rear.

    A single LED is seen on the rear licence plate number, an upgrade from the sedan. Also, limited to the RS model are features like a chunky split rear diffuser with carbon print, LED combination tail lights, and vertical reflectors. The last two elements are standard issues across the hatch model.

    Also, common to the RS and V models are 16-inch wheels (identical to the respective sedan siblings). Further, the City Hatchback V model gets a lower grille insert with honeycomb treatment.

    As of now, we are only aware of three features - an 8-inch touchscreen display which should, like the sedan, support Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and could get the same 8-speaker sound system. Next, two features are rear vents and the amazingly flexible & comfortable ULTRA seats.

    Honda loyals must be aware of the latter, i.e. the ULTRA Seats. Carried over from Jazz these sets offer four flexible seating arrangements namely - Utility, Refresh, Long and Tall.

    Under the hood configuration tally with its sedan sibling. So, it will be powered by a 121 PS/ 145 Nm 1.5-litre DOHC i-VTEC mill. The drive would be sent to the front wheels via CVT unit.

    As for the RS e:HEV model, it will be powered by the automaker's complex i-MMD hybrid system that generates a maximum power of 109 PS along with a peak torque of 253 Nm.

    Honda Sensing Suite of safety features can be found in the range-topping RS e:HEV trim. The suite offers the same seven functions as found in the City sedan. The list includes -

    • Auto high beam
    • Adaptive cruise control (without low speed follow)
    • Road departure mitigation
    • Collision mitigation braking system (AEB, front only)
    • Lane departure warning
    • Forward collision warning
    • Lane keep assist system

    Honda has introduced a new exterior colour option called the new Ignite Red Metallic. This one is a striking, slightly deeper red tone compared to the Passion Red Pearl hue which is currently on offer. In addition, there is a Metroid Grey Metallic shade (as mentioned on the Honda Thailand website), compared to the existing Modern Steel Metallic tone this one is much darker.
