2021 BMW 5 Series: What to expect

Do you remember the facelifted BMW 5 Series? The sedan made its global debut in May 2020 and was liked by auto enthusiasts and critics equally. Now, we have good news for you all, BMW Malaysia has confirmed the arrival of the 2021 5 Series by opening the car's 'register interest' page. Before the sedan arrived in Malaysia, our neighbour Thailand was on the receiving end.

Coming back to the Malaysian-spec 2021 BMW 5 Series, it will be offered in two variant options - 530e plug-in hybrid and 530i. Both the variants will be available in M Sport trim. The above-mentioned information was known via the ROI page on the BMW Shop. Apart from this, the page shares no other information, however taking clues from the images on the BMW Malaysia website, and the Thai-spec and global reveal model we have a rough idea of the 2021 BMW 5 Series specs and features.

So, here's what we are expecting from the 2021 BMW 5 Series -

Exterior styling

As mentioned earlier, in Malaysia the 5 Series will be offered in two trim options both in M Sport trim. Therefore, the M Sport exterior package comes in handy. It will include large intakes, U-shaped sharp contour connecting the headlamps from below (like in 3 Series), and reshaped bumper with more prominent contours. Also, the two models will run on 19-inch Y-spoke Style 845 M Two-tone alloy wheels and will feature edgy L-shaped DRLs which will be Laserlight items with blue 'eyebrows' in 530i and adaptive LED inits in 530e.
The blue 530i trim also appears to sport a sunroof, meaning it is a higher-spec variant.

Besides, part of the new design language is sharper headlights, U-shaped front bumper, a revised hexagonal double kidney grille, and three-dimensional taillights with C-shaped graphics.

Interior

On the inside, a 10.25-inch infotainment unit will come as standard, there will also be an option of a larger 12.3-inch unit. Compared to the previous-gen model, the seats will be more comfortable and will feature new upholstery and trim options. Further, the controls on the steering wheel are repositioned and the centre console will feature gloss black controls.

Engine

Coming to the under the hood configuration, the BMW 530e will be powered by the upgraded engine from the 330e. So, the 520i's B48 mill making 184 PS/300 Nm will be paired with a 58 kW electric motor developing 68 PS. The combined out rates 252 PS and 420 Nm of torque. The power is sent to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission. The highlight here is the presence of a new XtraBoost function that generates an extra 41 PS upon acceleration. Compared to the previous-gen model, the new electric model gets a larger battery, from 9.2 kWh to 12 kWh, which in turn improves the car's all-electric range from 48 km to somewhere between 62-67 km.

The 530i, on the other hand, sources its power from the tried and tested 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo mill with higher-pressure fuel-injection. The said mill develops a maximum output of 252 PS from 5,200 to 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 350 Nm from 1,450 to 4,800 rpm. The power is sent to the wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox.

Safety

The all-new BMW 5 Series comes with an improved suite of safety features. For instance, the Driving Assistant package now includes lane-keeping assist. Also, the Driving Assistant Professional kit gets crossing traffic detection for the autonomous emergency braking system. Other new features that are a part of the kit are - Active Navigation Guidance, Emergency Lane Assistance, Reversing Assistant function, and the new Drive Recorder function.

While this is all that we expect from the upcoming BMW 5 Series, the exact details will be revealed with the car's launch. So, stay tuned.
