2020 Mercedes-Benz E class facelift gets new engine and tech
KUALA LUMPUR: The new Mercedes-Benz E-Class teaser shows the facelifted model ahead of its debut. E-class is one of the most popular luxury cars and breaks cover with a package of updates and designing overhaul. This mid-life update for one of Mercedes’ global top-sellers, was scheduled to debut at the Geneva Motor Show, which now stands cancelled.
E-Class is now in its 10th generation and was first introduced in 2016. It now gets a significant upgrade to keep the momentum in pace with Audi A6 and BMW 5 series.
Designing revamp includes slight tweaks on both the interior and exterior faces. Powertrain features are also improvised with more efficient hybrid engines.
Coming to the design updates first, the new E-Class gets a new front end, with a slightly revised grille and newly designed headlamps. Headlamps are sharper than before and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL's) are giving it an eyebrow appeal. The razor-sharp headlamps are a common trait, which can be spotted in most of the Mercedes cars these days. Mercedes tristar-the three-pointed star has also received special ornamentation.
The bumpers at the front and rear give a prominent new and better look. Tail-lamps too get a new design which is sleeker than before along with a revived boot lid. Similarly, the AMG version of the E-Class now looks more muscular and boxier and the E-Class all-terrain gets a modernization which feels like it is now closer to other Mercedes-Benz SUVs.
Further, the E-Class now gets a total of seven engine options including plugin hybrids along with petrol and diesel engines. A four-cylinder mild-hybrid petrol motor is also incorporated with an integrated starter generator. Additionally, a 48-volt onboard electrical system is also fitted which will produce up to 20 bhp of additional output and 180 Nm more torque.
Further updates include extensive revisions to the driving assistance systems. Along with that the E-Class range now gets extraordinary features such as steering wheel hands-off detection, active distance assist, steering assist, active brake assist, active blind spot assist, and a parking system which includes a 360-degree camera.
Talking about the interior aesthetics, the cabin features well-groomed trims such as open pore silver ash-1ood, brushed aluminium, and burr walnut fondant. An adaptive driver seat which moves into a position that corresponds to your height is also a smart inclusion.
Take a look at the steering wheel, which speaks of freshness and new look. For the entertainment features, the latest MBUX infotainment system with two 10.25-inch screens are also placed.
Certain PHEV model-specific features are interesting to know, which includes intensified satellite navigation that overlays real-time forward camera footage with directional arrows and mood-changing programs that teach you to have a better posture, play light music, help you nap and wake up.
Wheels are also been given a new shape. Three new extra paint options called 'high-tech silver', 'graphite grey metallic' and 'mojave silver' will also be offered for appreciable user preferences.
While the refreshed E-Class is expected to go on sale for international markets in the coming months, we expect it should serve the Malaysian markets as well.
