2019 Proton Saga - All you need to know
If there is one car that most Malaysians can identify and relate to unequivocally, it is the Proton Saga. The Malaysian auto giant introduced the Saga for the first time way back in 1985 -- there have since been three generations of this seemingly irreplaceable and iconic family car in the nation. The Proton Saga is essentially a core part of the country’s B-segment affordable car segment and is choice for many buyers.
The first generation of the Saga shared a lot of its DNA with the Mitsubishi Lancer of the same era. While it was a new entrant in Malaysia, it wasn’t exactly a car you could proactively ride home about. However, it set the foundation for the Saga’s reputation and iconic status - something that hasn’t really been eclipsed by a long shot.
Recently Proton launched the all-new Saga and it is an integral member of the B-segment sedan genre. It had its initial debut back in late 2016, and it is based on the brand’s FLX architecture. This new model shares quite a bit of its basic mechanicals and features with its (slightly more expensive) Iriz hatchback stablemate.
However, what you pay is really important - especially considering this is a budget family car. So, it is pretty obvious that the 2019 Proton Saga is not going to rip a hole in your pocket. Here’s the breakdown of the Saga price…
2019 Proton Saga prices:
2019 Proton Saga | Price |
Standard MT | RM 32,800 |
Standard AT | RM 35,800 |
Premium AT | RM 39,800 |
With sales of the Proton Saga rising each month, this is undeniably one of the best cars available in the market in our country. Going up against the likes of the equally popular Perodua Bezza, the 2019 Proton Saga isn’t going to have the market easy for itself.
Also, along with the purchase price of the Saga, customers will get a 5-year/150,000-kilometre comprehensive warranty and free servicing up to three times post-purchase. The 2019 Proton Saga can be had in one of five colours. These include Ruby Red, Snow White, Armour Silver, Jet Grey and Rosewood Maroon.
2019 Proton Saga dimensions:
Measurements | 2019 Proton Saga |
Length | 4,331 mm |
Width | 1,689 mm |
Height | 1,491 mm |
Wheelbase | 2465 mm |
Boot Capacity | 420 litres |
Exterior
The 2019 Proton Saga’s exterior really puts it on the other side of the earlier generation. The new Saga not only looks more modern and better styled than its predecessor, but it also has the capacity to attract a lot more customers towards itself than ever before.
The front fascia now features sleeker headlamps that are sandwiched in-between the revised grille. There’s then the sculpted bumper that sports integrated LED daytime-running lights (DRLs) and sharper lower apron. Around the sides, you will see the new Saga’s sportier 15-inch rims (on the Premium variant), larger fender flares, a rising beltline and larger greenhouse area.
Around the back, there’s now a more vivid set of tail lamps, a boot-lip spoiler, and a more sculpted rear bumper with faux vents and exhaust ports. Overall, the new 2019 Proton Saga is far more attractive than its precursor.
Interior
The interior of the 2019 Saga is arguably better than what its predecessors had to offer. Proton has worked on improving the quality of this interior, and they have succeeded in it in a way. When it comes to the room inside this cabin, there’s enough to keep most people happy and satisfied.
The rear bench has enough room to seat three passengers and without any major issues. As for the seats, they are comfortable and provide enough support for most people. There’s no shortage of headroom, kneeroom or legroom. As for build quality, it’s alright, and so is the cabin insulation.

Performance
The 2019 Saga isn’t the most powerful sedan; but thanks to Proton’s efforts, it scores well when it comes to its cabin NVH and ride quality. You might not be overtaking any other car with must gusto, but the Saga can cruise on the highway without any issues.
There’s noticeably less suspension noise entering the cabin, and the 2019 Proton Saga remains appreciably more composed than its predecessors. More importantly, this cabin remains (slightly) more quiet than its Bezza rival.
In conclusion
The 2019 Proton Saga is undeniably one of the most value-for-money cars in its segment. If you’re in the market for an affordable, decently-built, efficient, safe, and comfortable enough family sedan, then the latest Proton Saga wouldn’t make you regret the money you spent.
