2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class enters production at Magna Steyr

KUALA LUMPUR: The new Mercedes-Benz G-Class was first unveiled at the North American Auto Show in January this year. This iconic grand off-road SUV has now been put into the production phase at the traditional Magna Steyr plant in Austria.

The Mercedes-Benz’s Magna Steyr plant has been a very significant production facility as all of the G-Class models have been built here since 1979. Moreover, all of the future G-Class models and generation updates are also expected to be built at this site.

The head of the off-road products at Mercedes-Benz, Gunnar Güthenke, has said that this upcoming G-Class will see the biggest transformation in the long 39 years of history. The iconic SUV retains the most popular features which it has been known for, the ride comfort and robustness being the foremost. The company is even focusing on making further developments in this SUV in order to improve the off-road experience further. And for this, the only place where it could place its trust on was the 39-year-old production facility at Magna Steyr.

The 2019 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is being produced along with the previous generation model. It is primarily built for the government fleets and commercial customers and is called as the G-Class Professional. It is quite interesting to know that the company’s production plant in Magna Steyr is one of the few plants in the world to have both the old and new generation, that are bare-bone and luxurious trims, built under the same roof.

As the production of the new Mercedes-Benz G-Class has commenced, it is quite noteworthy to know that it is being done for the US market only. Other international destinations may get the car in the following year. The first ones to be sold will be the G550 which would get the BiTurbo, 4.0-litre, V8 engine that would put a humongous power of 421 PS along with a peak torque of 610 Nm. Other variants will also be available in the following year.
