Finally, after a long wait, BYD Malaysia has launched the all-new Seal EV in the country. The electric car was first showcased in the local market at the end of 2022 and then it was teased again late last year.

However as of today, the official distributor of BYD cars in Malaysia, Sime Darby Beyond Auto has launched the Seal at the TRX Exchange.

The car has been launched in two variants in the local market and not three as was speculated earlier. This makes Malaysia different from Singapore, Australia, and Thailand, where the EV is offered in three trim options - base Dynamic, mid-range Premium, and top-level Performance. The distributor has omitted the entry-level Dynamic variant for Malaysia, but that doesn’t disappoint us as we are still getting the best of features.

BYD Seal’s boot can accommodate up to four standard 20-inch luggage compartments. The car’s 345-liters boot expands to 1,310-litres (with folded flat seats) thanks to the split 60:40 seats.

The Seal benefits from the in-house developed CTB technology that incorporates the Blade Battery into the car’s body for a robust ‘sandwich’ construction. The setup helps the EV achieve torsional rigidity of 40,500 Nm compared to luxury cars. Overall, the Blade Battery is a structural component and not just an energy source.

The BYD Seal offers a truly exhilarating experience all thanks to its strong e-motor and battery setup. Both the Seal Premium and Seal Performance feature distinct mechanical specs that are discussed below.

The Seal Premium is powered by a single-motor, real-wheel drive configuration that pumps out a maximum power of 308 hp along with a peak torque of 360 Nm. The trim comes with an 82.5 kWh LFP Blade battery.

The Seal Performance, on the other hand, features an all-wheel drive setup. It comes with a dual-motor powertrain where the front motor makes 215hp and 310 Nm and the rear unit makes 308 hp and 360 Nm. The total output reads 523 hp and 670 Nm of torque. It gets the same 82.5 kWh battery pack.
