As 2024 draws to a close, it’s time to look back and see the major highlights of the Malaysian automotive industry. While we have already reviewed the exciting launches across different segments, we brought a list of car models that captured your attention the most in today's roundup. 

We analyzed the search trends on Zigwheels Malaysia to uncover the top 10 car models our readers were most eager to learn about this year. So, let’s get started - 

Proton S70

Proton’s rising star, the S70, topped search charts and gained huge popularity this year. First introduced in late 2023, this C-segment sedan quickly established itself as the leader in the category. As of November 2024, the automaker has sold a total of 17,512 S70s with an average monthly sales of 1,590 units. It is quite popular in states like Selangor, Johor, and Penang.

Proton offers the S70 in four variants - Executive, Premium, Flagship, and Flagship X, priced between RM 73,800 and RM 94,800. The sedan features a 150 PS /226 Nm 1.5-litre turbo MPI three-cylinder, latest safety systems, and seamless connectivity. 

Honda City  

The second model on this list needs no introduction, as it has been winning the hearts of millions of people all around the world for five generations. The Honda City is among the most searched cars on our platform, and it is also one of the best-selling ones in the country. The City ranks eighth in the top best-selling cars in Malaysia, with year-to-date sales of 24,887 units.

The fifth-gen Honda City facelift was launched in Malaysia last year. It is offered in five variants - S, E, V, RS, and e:HEV RS, priced between RM 89,600 and RM 95,500. The sedan comes in two drivetrain options - a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated and an i-MMD hybrid unit and boasts stylish looks and a comfortable and luxurious interior. 

Honda Civic

Taking the third spot is also a Honda model that has been turning heads with its impressive design and features for decades. We are talking about the Honda Civic, which continues to shine in its eleventh-gen iteration. Consistently searched by potential buyers on Zigwheels Malaysia, the Civic has been the best-selling non-national C-segment sedan in Malaysia for eight consecutive years.

Honda Malaysia has recently started accepting bookings for the all-new Civic facelift, with the launch set to be held in January 2025. The facelift brings significant cosmetic and tech upgrades to the table with powertrain options likely to remain unchanged. The ongoing 2024 Honda Civic is offered in four variants - 1.5L E, 1.5L V, 1.5L RS, and e:HEV 2.0L RS with prices ranging from RM 131,900 to RM 167,900.

BYD Seal

The BYD Seal grabbed much love and attention in 2024, which not only made it one of the most searched cars on Zigwheels Malaysia but also one of the top-selling EVs in Malaysia. BYD has sold a total of 2,664 units of the EV so far this year.

Launched in February this year, this sleek all-electric sedan comes in three variants - Dynamic, Premium, and Performance, with prices ranging from RM 163,800 to RM 199,800. It comes equipped with either a 61.4 kWh or  82.5 kWh LFP battery pack, offering a range between 460 km - 570 km.

Jaecoo J7

Launched only in July this year, the Jaecoo J7 made a surprise entry on this list thanks to its competitive pricing and extraordinary features. It is offered in two locally-assembled variants - the J7 2WD and J7 AWD, by a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol inline-four cylinder engine and a seven-speed wet dual-clutch automatic transmission. 

The Jaecoo J7 stands out in the crowded SUV market with its sleek exterior, robust underpinnings, unique All-Road Drive Intelligent System (ARDIS) with seven terrain modes, and a 540-degree camera system. 

Surprisingly, all this comes at an affordable price range of RM 138,800 to RM 148,800, making it an intelligent yet budget-friendly SUV in Malaysia.

Proton Saga

Next up is a national icon that has been winning the hearts of Malaysians for almost 40 years now. While the S70 is a rising star, the Saga remains Proton’s most popular model with a total sales of 2 million units since its debut in 1985.

This Proton Saga has gone through three generations, with significant design, performance, and technology upgrades, making it Malaysians' favourite car. It comes in four variants - Standard MT, Standard AT, Premium AT, and Premium S AT, with prices ranging from RM 34,800 to RM 44,800. The sedan is powered by a 1.3-litre four-cylinder VVT engine generating 95 PS and 120 Nm of torque. 

Proton X50

The Proton X50, ranked seventh, is the third Proton model in the list of top 10 most searched cars on Zigwheels Malaysia, highlighting the brand’s popularity among enthusiasts. This B-segment SUV also holds a position in the top 10 cars in Malaysia with a year-to-date sales of 20,386 units.

Proton offers the X50 in four variants - Standard, Executive, Premium, and Flagship, powered by a 1.5-litre mill available in two different tunes - direct-injected and port-injected. The price begins at RM 86,300 and goes up to RM 113,300.

Chery Omoda 5

Launched in July 2023, the Omoda 5 is also one of the top models, enthusiasts searched on Zigwheels Malaysia this year. Being a direct rival to the Proton X50 and Honda HR-V, this Chinese SUV offers a blend of practicality and style that resonates with Malaysian riders.

The Chery Omoda 5 comes in two locally assembled trims - C and H, priced at RM 108,800 and RM 118,800. Both are powered by a 1.5-litre turbocharged inline-four engine and a continuously variable transmission with nine virtual gears.

Honda City Hatchback

Making it to the ninth position, the Honda City Hatchback is a top contender in the compact hatchback market that has proved its mettle with consistent performance and demand. It attracts modern Malaysian consumers with its stylish appearance, advanced tech features, and hybrid powertrain.

The City Hatchback comes in five variants - S, E, V, RS, and e:HEV; price begins at RM 85,900 and goes all the way to RM 112,900. Powertrain options include - a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated four-cylinder i-VTEC and a 1.5-litre dual-motor hybrid engine.

Honda CR-V 

Rounding off the list is the Honda CR-V which enjoys top spot in Malaysia's C-segment SUV category. While several enthusiasts searched for this Japanese SUV on our portal this year, 10, 379 people (as of November 2024) registered it in their names.

The Honda CR-V comes in four trim options - S, E, V, and RS with prices ranging from RM 159,900 and up to RM 195,900. It is a well-rounded SUV with a spacious, tech-savvy interior and advanced safety systems like Honda Sensing. Powertrain choices include - a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and a 2.0-litre Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) mild-hybrid system.
