Suzuki Burgman electric version on the cards?

Suzuki Burgman electric version on the cards?

KUALA LUMPUR: While auto and motor manufacturers all around the world are speeding up in the electrification race, Suzuki seems to be moving slowly and taking calculative moves. While the company’s direction on the e-path is unclear, it seems like Suzuki has taken its first step in the electrification journey.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Which Suzuki model will benefit from an electric version?

Suzuki’s latest patent drawings showcase the electric version of the already up and running Burgman scooter. However, unlike the regular version with a 400 cc unit, this one houses a smaller 125 cc unit.
  • What does the patent image reveal about the electric Burgman?

The upcoming Suzuki e-scooter will come fitted with a conventional battery-operated tech underneath the traditional steel frame. Also, it will get a fixed battery setup that will fil the under-seat area.

We believe the shift from 400cc to 125cc is related to Suzuki’s recent confirmation of removing its name from every motorcycle competition on the face of this earth, to purely focus on the practical aspect of motorcycle manufacturing and not chasing performance numbers.

Suzuki’s decision to back out from all the racing competitions can be based on the shift in the funding structure that now bends more towards e-projects instead of such events.

    • The upcoming Suzuki e-scooter will come fitted with a conventional battery-operated tech underneath the traditional steel frame
    • Unlike the regular petrol-powered version wherein the engine & transmission is built into the swingarm, the electric model showcases a motorcycle-style layout. Meaning a motor mounted in the frame and a chain-drive rear wheel
    • Unlike the removable battery setup seen in Honda and Yamaha models, Suzuki opts for a fixed battery setup filling the under-seat area. This means in the event of the battery draining out to the max, it can only be recharged as swapping it for a new one is not an option

As Suzuki’s e-scooter work is still in the early stages, things can change/alter in the near future. Also, we expect the first prototype to arrive only next year and then only the actual picture would get somewhat clear.
