Patent images reveal a new front-facing camera for Honda Africa Twin

KUALA LUMPUR: Yes, you read it just right. Honda will add a new front-facing camera on the upcoming Africa Twin motorcycle, confirming the recent patent images.

Honda recently filed a patent drawing of the Africa Twin with a new camera on the front. The new addition will come in handy in traffic monitoring and offer data to active rider aids. The front camera would use sensors and not a lens and will feature variable focus and zoom functionality.

In addition to the new front camera, Honda has also filed a patent for its own camera mount which on the Africa Twin would be located below the LED headlamp. This placement assures the camera remains protected from road debris like dust and stones which could otherwise damage the unit. Also, the light thrown by the vehicle ahead would not hinder the camera’s function via this placement. Thus ensuring a clear image always, day or night, on- or off-road.

There’s more to Honda’s front-facing camera. Instead of being fixed as many may expect, it remains suspended. This feature keeps it immune from vibrations.

While the mount and front camera seen in the patent images is specific to the Africa Twin as of now, however, both are expected to be adapted to other Honda motorcycles.
