Honda Spacy: Reasons to buy

Honda Spacy: Reasons to buy

The Honda Spacy has now been with us for a very long time. And through this time, it has not exactly changed much. Yet, with its low price and distinctive styling, it still stands out from the new crop of affordable automatic scooters. Here are some of the reasons that make the Honda Spacy a good buy -

Classy design

A lot can be said about the Honda Spacy’s design. When it was first launched in 2013, it came in a sportier guise with stripy graphics. Honda, however, soon realized that the classic lines of the Spacy lent themselves better to a more mature styling. So, in 2016, the graphics were done away with to be replaced by a more restrained look. Solid color schemes like Pearl Magellanic Black, Euphoria Red Metallic and Pearl Metalloid White were introduced to give it a more restrained look. The 14-inch five-spoke alloy wheels are left silver to better complement the glossy color schemes. Smaller touches like the chrome finished 3D emblem also add to the scooter’s flair.

The most noticeable design feature, however, is the leather seat. No generic black seats to be found here. While not everyone may like the color of the seats, they do tend to make the Honda Spacy stand out like nothing else on the road today. The beige color is not limited to the seat and can also be found on the plastics on the seat support, floorboard and the back of the front apron. While such a bold design choice may not be to everyone’s liking, the Honda Spacy has certainly had no trouble finding customers willing to buy their scooter. The design, though a bit old after so many years, certainly holds a nostalgic charm. Especially for women.

Practical features

Targeting female riders requires some special considerations. And here, they seem to have covered all the basics. Firstly, the scooter’s dimensions with a length of 1841 mm, width of 660 mm, and height of 1094 mm make it compact for city roads and tight traffic. There are - wide for the segment - 80/90 front and 90/90 rear tires that give it a good grip.

Then there is the 18-litre underseat storage compartment. It is shaped in such a way that it can easily fit a full-face helmet. Additionally, there are two storage compartments behind the apron that act as glove boxes. As if that wasn’t enough there is also a multipurpose hanger that can be used to secure a handbag. Aimed at first-time riders, the Honda Spacy also comes with a side stand safety switch. This ensures that the scooter can only be switched on when the side stand switch is disabled. Careless riders would be thankful for this feature.

The seat height is kept low while the handlebars are high and there is enough space on the footboard to move about. Riding the Spacy then is a very comfortable and accommodating experience. Honda has also managed to keep the weight of the scooter limited to 100 kg making it easy to ride for newbies and women alike.

Everyday affordability

Firstly, there is the engine. The OHV single cylinder carbureted engine produces 8.65 hp at 8000 rpm and 8.27 Nm of torque at 6500 rpm. It uses a CVT for transmission and has both an electric and a kick starter. While the scooter misses out on fuel injection, it still delivers a good fuel economy of 41.5 kmpl. The 5.2-litre of fuel ensures that you don’t have to visit your local petrol pump as often.

Secondly, the Honda Spacy can be bought for a price as low as RM 4716. Such a low price for a refined and fuel-efficient scooter from Honda with such a large cargo space is not very easy to find. Being a Honda product, it is also guaranteed to serve you for a long time with minimal upkeep and repair.

Honda certainly doesn’t see a reason to upgrade the Honda Spacy. Its classy design, practical features, and affordable price add to its everlasting appeal. And as the many riders of the Honda Spacy would tell you, Honda is completely right in its decision. Why fix something when it ain't broke?
