Volvo Car Malaysia to export EVs to Vietnam and the Philippines

KUALA LUMPUR: The electrification journey of Volvo Car Malaysia was initiated with the launch of the locally-assembled XC40 Recharge Pure Electric in March 2022. This Sweden-based luxury automaker is the first company to locally assemble EVs in Malaysia and has aimed to transform the country into an electric vehicle hub in the Asean region.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • In which countries is Volvo Car Malaysia planning to start exporting electric vehicles?

Volvo Car Malaysia is planning to start exporting electric vehicles in Vietnam and the Philippines.
  • What are the company’s long-term goals?

Volvo Car Malaysia aims to transform the country into an electric vehicle hub in the Asean region and become a pure EV brand by the end of the decade.
  • The company already exports electric cars to Thailand and Indonesia and now is set to expand its export operations in Vietnam and the Philippines.

“Volvo Car Malaysia’s ambition towards an all-electric Malaysia is steadily becoming a reality. Our assembly plant here in Malaysia plays an important role in our electrification ambition as we bring our electric vehicles to two more Asean countries – Vietnam and the Philippines. The exportation of our locally assembled electric vehicles is one of our many steps to propel Malaysia into becoming a hub for electric vehicles in the Asean region,” said Charles Frump, Managing Director of VCM.

The capabilities of assembling electric vehicles locally provide Volvo Car Malaysia with an excellent opportunity to lead the premium electric car market and drive Malaysians further towards an all-electric future.

Volvo Cars Malaysia targets to become a pure EV brand by the end of the decade after hitting the goal of achieving 75% sales from the Recharge Pure Electric range by 2025.

The brand’s first EV, the XC40 Recharge, was very well received and garnered over 400 orders within the first month of its launch. Marking its next move on the local EV journey was the C40 Recharge Pure Electric introduced in December last year.

Next on the cards is the all-new Volvo EX90 teased during the launch of the C40 Recharge. The EX90 has been touted as the brand’s safest car ever thanks to its LIDAR system, which comes connected with multiple sensors, radars, and cameras and can detect a range of up to 250 metres. It is powered by a 408 PS dual-motor setup and a 111-kWh battery pack and can run for 600 km on a single charge.
