Volkswagen Malaysia recalls 6,671 vehicles over faulty Takata airbags

KUALA LUMPUR: The official distributor of Volkswagen cars in Malaysia, Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia, has issued a nationwide recall notice for the replacement of the defective Takata airbags. Takata Corporation has been in the spotlight for its faulty airbag inflators for more than a decade, leading to one of the biggest recalls in the global automotive industry.

    VPCM explains that the problem associated with the “front driver airbag housing generator is caused by deterioration of the generator’s propellant due to high air humidity and temperature fluctuations over a long period”. It poses a potential risk of injury for both the driver and passenger.

    The automaker will conduct the nationwide recall in phases, during which all affected models will undergo inspection. To ensure the smooth and efficient execution of the recall, VPCM has taken all necessary steps. Additionally, it has ensured the availability of required parts with its dealer partners. If required, the replacement of parts and labour will be at no cost.

    Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia will notify all identified owners via email and WhatsApp. However, individuals who purchased pre-owned vehicles, either from a previous owner or a used car dealership, are advised to contact their nearest Volkswagen authorised dealer urgently for verification.
