Volkswagen Golf GTI to debut at Geneva Motor Show

KUALA LUMPUR: Leading German automobile major Volkswagen is all set to premiere the Golf Grand Tourer Injection (GTI) at the annual Geneva International Motor Show which begins from 5 March. That aside, the Wolfsburg-headquartered company will introduce its top-selling hatchback’s Grand Tourer Diesel (GTD) version at the same event.

The eighth-generation model of the Volkswagen Golf was introduced last year and automobile enthusiasts have been waiting for the arrival of the car’s high-performance diesel trim.
Volkswagen has retained all the major features of the Golf GTI in the car’s upcoming version. These include a powerful internal combustion engine (ICE), an agile running gear, the front-wheel driving configuration, and the clean design. Other features include the GTI emblem on the radiator grille and the chequered seat covers. The company has kept the final look of the car closely under wraps which will be only revealed at the Motor Show.

Updates in the new Volkswagen Golf GTI are expected to comprise an array of intelligence assistance systems and fully digital features. The Golf was first introduced in 1974. The ageing car, according to the company, will retain its modern-day relevance because of the newly added features.

Volkswagen has equipped the upcoming Golf GTI with the Car2X technology. It is a wireless communication system which allows cars to communicate between each other about road conditions and incidents with half a mile. The technology also allows sharing of trip details and other important information for on-road safety. The company is a member of the Communication Network Vehicle Road Global Extension which attempts to define an architecture for inter-car communication.

Other technological additions to the Golf GTI are expected to include Volkswagen’s Travel Assist system which helps in driving the car up to a speed of 210kmph. The feature also adds some mild autonomy to braking, accelerating, and steering functions. The Golf GTI will be available with the optional LED crossbar, integrated into the daytime running lights (DRLs).

While Volkswagen is yet to disclose the performance numbers of the Golf GTI, it has promised that the car’s turbocharged motor will exceed market expectations. The car’s running gear, Volkswagen clams, can be precisely set by drivers according to their individual preferences with the new adaptive chassis control function.
