UMW Toyota's next hybrid might be the Innova Zenix; get to know it in advance
The local distributor of Toyota cars in Malaysia, UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) confirmed the introduction of a new hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). This new HEV will join the single and already available car in the segment, the Corolla Cross Hybrid.
The automaker is yet to reveal the name of its next HEV, however, there are two viable options we can think of, one of which is the recently launched 2023 Innova Zenix. Another possibility is the arrival of the 2023 Vios.
Here we’ll be discussing the possibility of the soon arrival of the third-gen Innova and what it will bring to the table.
Upcoming 2023 Toyota Innova Zenix: Full details
Platform: Unlike the previous-gen MPV that was built on the IMV ladder frame chassis (also supporting the Hilux and Fortuner), the new Innova Zenix features a monocoque construction, based on the automaker’s Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA).
The new platform replaces the longitudinal-mounted engine, rear-wheel drive setup with a transversely-mounted engine, and front-wheel drive setup.
Dimensions: The new Innova with its new platform brings in an extended body layout. The MPV measures 4,755 mm in length (+20 mm), 1,850 mm in width (+20 mm), and 1,795 mm in height. The wheelbase now measures 100 mm more at 2,850 mm.
Design: The latest-gen Innova showcases an SUV-like design with clues like black body wheel arches cladding and black lower sections of the doors. Other highlighting bits on the outside include - a hexagonal grille, angular headlamps separated by horizontal LED light strips, 16-/17-/18-inch alloys, a dynamic side profile with forward D-pillars & backward A-pillars, and a voice control tailgate. The MPV also gets LED DRLs and LED fog lamps.
Interior: The new Innova cabin is as inviting as its exterior design. The dashboard is revised featuring a more elegant appearance than before. The dash’s layers are accentuated via contrasting trim colors with the floating center console with integrated center stack being the focal point of the entire setup. The center console also houses a 9/10-inch touchscreen infotainment system, gear lever, center air vents, and digital controls for the air-con system.
Between the front seats is space for armrests, cup holders, and USB ports. The new model also features enhanced cabin space, thanks to which certain variants even benefit from second-row captain chairs with ottomans.
Also, part of the equipment list is an electronic parking brake with auto hold, a panoramic roof, and a 10-inch dual rear seat entertainment screen.
Engine: The 2023 Innova’s hybrid powertrain setup consists of a naturally-aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine generating a maximum power of 152 PS at 6,000 rpm along with a peak torque of 187 Nm from 4,400 to 5,500 rpm. The e-motor, on the other hand, makes 113 PS and 205 Nm, bringing the total system output down to 186 PS. In the Indonesia-spec model, the e-motor is powered by a nickel-metal hybrid battery stored under the front seats.
Apart from the hybrid powertrain, the MPV will get an option for an internal combustion engine. A 2.0-litre unit making 174 PS at 6,600 rpm along with 205 Nm from 4,500 to 4,900 rpm.
Safety: The new Innova Zenix benefits from a bunch of safety features namely, six airbags, a parking sensor with corner sensor, Vehicle Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, a parking camera, a child restraint system, blind spot monitoring, wireless/smart door lock, vehicle approach notice, anti-theft system.
The range-topping variants are expected to benefit from Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 technology that includes a pre-collision system, dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert & lane tracing assist, and automatic high beam.
