UMW Toyota may bring back the Camry Hybrid to Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR: In a move towards promoting sustainability and eco-friendly mobility solutions, UMW Toyota has previewed the Camry Hybrid alongside electrified versions of the Alphard and Vellfire MPVs at the ongoing Beyond Zero event. 

The Camry Hybrid, a greener alternative to the D-segment sedan, was previously on offer in the country but was discontinued upon the arrival of the eighth-generation model of the car. It was also shown during the company’s multi-pathway strategy briefing last year.

The presence of the Camry Hybrid at Beyond Zero has stirred up anticipation for its comeback among attendees. However, the automaker has not confirmed the model’s arrival yet.

The hybrid setup of the Toyota Camry Hybrid comprises a 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle  Dynamic Force engine producing 178 PS and 221 Nm and an electric motor tuned to make 120 PS and 202 Nm. The total system output is rated at 211. As for the transmission, it gets an electronic continuously variable transmission.

The hybrid setup comes mated to a nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery, located under the rear seats instead of under the boot floor This configuration enhances cargo capacity and reduces the car's centre of gravity.

With a growing emphasis on environmental consciousness and the increasing demand for electrified vehicles, the preview of the Camry Hybrid aligns with UMW Toyota's commitment to offering eco-friendly options to Malaysian consumers.

Other than the Camry Hybrid, the event showcased an extensive lineup of electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, and fuel cell electric vehicles, including the highly anticipated bZ4X, Hilux BEV, and C+pod ultra-compact BEV, Toyota Mirai FCEV, GranAce FCEV, and Hilux FCEV.
