Toyota Yaris hits 10 million global sales milestone

KUALA LUMPUR: After the Corolla, Camry, RAV4, Hilux, and Land Cruiser, the latest Toyota model to reach the iconic milestone of 10 million global sales is the Yaris. Dubbed as the“little genius with big impact”, the hatchback has consistently set the bar for innovation and received many accolades over the years. This impressive sales benchmark is a testament to its widespread popularity.

First introduced in Japan in 1999, the car has been known by different names. Depending on variant and region, it is called Vitz, Platz, Echo, Belta, Vios, and Scion iA. However, the 10 million mark considers only the Yaris, Vitz, Yaris Cross, and GR Yaris nameplates.

Currently, the trend-setting hatchback is in the fourth generation that was launched in 2020. With this generation upgrade, it became the world’s safest compact car, thanks to Advanced Driver Assist systems (ADAS) being provided as standard. 

The fourth-generation model is based on Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) GA-B platform offering enhanced dynamic performance and improved ride and handling. The car features an eye-catching design and a wider, lower, and more compact appearance. Powering is a more efficient drivetrain with a 16% improvement to a total system output of 116 hp. 

Toyota produces the Yaris in 10 different countries, including Japan, Brazil, and China. The 10 millionth unit of the car was the Yaris GR Sport produced in France which is home to the car’s production in Europe since 2001.

Upon achieving this milestone, Didier Leroy, Chairman, Toyota Motor Europe said, “Today, 22 years after the grand opening of Toyota's plant in France, TMMF celebrates the 10 millionth Yaris car being sold around the world. This global sales milestone is a token of the confidence that the Toyota Group has continuously demonstrated towards this French site that has produced more than 4.5 million Yaris and Yaris Cross cars since its establishment in 2001. It is an honour and my great pleasure that we can share this moment today with the 5,000 members of the site.”

UMW Toyota offers the Yaris hatchback in three variants - 1.5J AT, 1.5E AT, and 1.5G AT, priced between RM 73,800 and RM 87,600. All variants come powered by the same 1.5-litre dual VVT-i mill that produces a maximum power of 107 PS at 6000 rpm and a torque of 140 Nm at 4200 pm.
