Subaru unveils 6th generation Outback at 2019 New York Auto Show

KUALA LUMPUR: Every automaker has a few core models and for Subaru, the Outback is one of them and has been around for over 25 years. At the 2019 New York Auto Show, Subaru unveiled the 6th generation Outback wagon.

The 2020 Outback sits on the Subaru Global Platform (SGP). This platform features in many other Subaru models like the XV, Impreza, Ascent, and Legacy. Compared to the previous Outback platform, the SGP is 70% stiffer in both torsional and front suspension rigidity. It is also 100% stiffer in the front lateral flexural and rear subframe rigidity. What this means is that the new Outback is capable of absorbing over 40% more energy in front/side crashes. Other improvements are found in the dynamics and NVH levels.

Design-wise, the new Outback follows Subaru’s ‘Dynamic X Solid’ language. Up front, the resemblance to the Legacy is quite obvious. The large hexagonal grille, sleek headlamps, (with C shaped LED DRLs) and creased bonnet are all derived from the latest Legacy. For a more rugged appearance, the Outback comes with all round body cladding finished in black/silver and has a 220 mm ground clearance. The wagon body type means the boot is quite large (2,143 litres with the rear seats folded down) and the wider tailgate provides easier access to the cargo bay. The hands-free power tailgate along with the one-touch lifting cargo cover adds convenience. Step inside the new Outback and you will mistake it for a Legacy. The entire dashboard layout is identical to the new Legacy.

Powering the Outback are the same powerplants found in the Legacy. The first is a 2.4-litre turbo 4-cylinder which makes 260 bhp and 376 Nm of torque. There is also a non-turbo 2.5-litre 4-cylinder unit which pushes out 182 bhp and 239 Nm. Standard on all Outback models is the Lineartronic CVT gearbox with 8 virtual rations and paddle shifters. You also get Subaru’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. At the front, the Outback uses MacPherson struts with new internal rebound springs, aluminium lower L-arms, and new 23-mm hollow stabilizer bar for its front suspension. At the rear, you get a double-wishbone layout with subframe, coil springs, and new 19 mm hollow stabilizer bar.

In the US, every Outback variant will come with 8 airbags as standard along with Subaru’s EyeSight Driver Assist Technology. With this, you get features like Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with lane Centering, Pre-Collision Braking, and DriverFocus Distraction Mitigation System.

The 2020 Outback should help Subaru to continue the legacy of being the brand's most successful models. No information is available as to when it will make it to Malaysia at this point.
