Reasons why new Volkswagen Arteon R-Line 4Motion is worth the wait
Born in 2017, the Volkswagen Arteon made its Malaysian debut last year in a single R-Line trim after a long wait and since then it is tempting the ones who do not want a crossover SUV. The 5-door sedan is regarded for its amazing sense of style and sophistication, paired with dynamic handling and performance. Now, the German marque has its freshened-up version on cards that is likely to be launched soon in the local market.
Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia has opened the new Arteon R-Line 4Motion bookings and also detailed its specifications and estimated price. If you are looking to buy the upcoming car, have a look at the reasons why we think the Arteon R-Line 4Motion is worth the wait.
New Exterior styling
Being a true showstopper, the Volkswagen Arteon truly reflects its name. ‘Art’ describes the harmonious lines and emotionality, and ‘eon’ signifies it as a premium VW model. Upfront, there is a redesigned full-face louvered grille that nicely gels with an illuminated strip linking the daytime running lights. The Arteon facelift also gets a more prominent front bumper with body-coloured air intakes Towards the rear, new LED 3D tail lights with sequential indicators spruce up the sedan’s sloping fastback design.
The upcoming Arteon also carries the new Volkswagen and R logos, along with sporty R-Line trimmings that further accentuate its athleticism. It continues to ride on 19-inch Montevideo turbine-style dual-tone alloy wheels. The Arteon dimensions also remain the same with 4,862 mm length, 1,871 mm width, and 1,427 mm height, and a wheelbase of 2,841 mm.
The new Arteon R-Line colour options include Lapiz Blue, Oryx White, Deep Black, Pyrite Silver, and Manganese Grey.
New Interior styling and tech
Complementing the restyled exterior is the new cabin that received a comprehensive remodeling for a more comfy feel. The updates include:
- A new steering wheel with haptic touch controls
- ErgoComfort sports seats in Nappa Carbon leather featuring the new R logo
- A premium 700-watt Harman Kardon 12-speaker audio system
- 9.2" Discover Pro infotainment paired with voice and gesture control, and wireless App-Connect for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
- A high-resolution Digital Cockpit offering convenience and customisation at the touch of the fingertips
- New touch-sensitive switches for the climate controls
- An expanded 30-colour pack for the ambient lighting
The other tech goodies on board comprise keyless entry, push-button start, power-adjustable front seats with driver’s side memory, triple-zone auto climate control, auto lights and wipers, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC), adaptive dampers, a 360-degree camera, and a hands-free powered tailgate.
More powerful engine
The Arteon R-Line facelift is powered by a modern and efficient powertrain that brings on high power and torque. This is an uprated 2.0 litre TSI turbo four-popper engine that punches out a maximum power output of 280 PS between 5,100 and 6,500 rpm and a peak torque of 350 Nm from 1,700 to 5,600 rpm.
In comparison with the previous engine, it generates 90 PS more power and 30 Nm more torque. The engine is mated to a seven-speed DSG wet dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel-drive system, propelling the sedan from zero to 100 kmph in just 5.6 seconds.
Volkswagen has not revealed the new Arteon fuel consumption figures, for reference, the outgoing one has a combined mileage of 15.8 kmpl.
Updated ADAS suite
In terms of safety, the luxurious Arteon sedan already had an impressive safety suite, but the automaker updated the pack by adding more features to it. The new features are Lane Assist, Side Assist, and Driver Alert. The ongoing safety bits include seven airbags, ABS with EBD and brake assist, Stability Control, Automatic post collision brake system, Rest Assist, Tyre pressure monitoring system, and ISOFIX child seat anchors.
2021 Volkswagen Arteon R-Line price
The locally assembled 2021 Volkswagen Arteon R-Line 4Motion is likely to be priced between RM 245,000 and RM 255,000 at the time of launch. The price includes the sales and service tax (SST) rebate that is in place until the end of the year.
