Proton Iriz R3 Malaysian Touring Car all set for Malaysian Championship Series

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysian Championship Series (formerly known as Malaysian Super Series) is scheduled to be held from August 28 to August 30. Proton is all set to roll out its challenger for round 4 of the series which would be Proton Iriz R3 Malaysian Touring Car. The racing version of this B-segment hatch was spotted at the Sepang International Circuit for its first shakedown test.

Under the hood, the build quality is not kept conventional because it is built according to the Malaysian Touring Car specifications. It is powered by a 1.6-litre turbo mill instead of the 2.0-litre NA engines which are used by competitors in that class. Driver and team principal Tengku Djan Ley said that these turbocharged engines would stimulate the commercialization of technology used in racing. This engine would be capable of producing 190 hp which would be channeled through a five-speed manual transmission to its front wheels.

Covered in silver paint, many changes can be noticed throughout the exterior. The most prominent being a new front and rear spoiler along with a massive front splitter. Further, it is anchored with 15-inch R3 wheels covered in semi-slick Hankook Ventus tyres measuring 195/55/R15. Moving to the interior, it is integrated with a six-point roll cage in accordance to Malaysian Touring Car regulations. Moreover, Recaro Pole Position race bucket seats are also provided for a perfect racing experience. Additional features include a Sparco steering wheel, a Tonnka pedal box, Alcon racing brake callipers and Ohlins adjustable coil overs.

Tengku Djan Ley said that Iriz's first proper race would be the Sepang 1,000 km endurance race in November and finally in 2016 Malaysian Championship Series. He further added that in terms of speed Iriz was not as quick as the Perve and Supreme S at the moment but as a startup it was on par with other cars in its category.
