KUALA LUMPUR: Peugeot, the brand which is known for its design, technology, and performance. This can be observed from the fact that it has received Europe’s most coveted automotive award, the ‘Car Of The Year’ tag for the sixth time. In 2020, the prestigious trophy was presented to the new Peugeot 208 after being judged by an independent jury of 60 European journalists, all automotive specialists.
The previous winning models include Peugeot 504 sedan (1969), Peugeot 405 sedan (1988), Peugeot 307 (2002), Peugeot 308 (2014) and Peugeot 3008 SUV (2017). The long history of achievements reflects the excellent design language, technical innovation, and performance of its Peugeot models over the last 50 years.
The all-new Peugeot 208 is the latest on the list. It features a distinctive design, engaging driving dynamics and smart use of technology. Along with internal combustion engines, the brand also offers an electric version to its future drivers. The Peugeot e-208 marks a new stage in the world of electric mobility. The electric powertrain is tuned to produce 136 PS with 260 Nm of torque along with a driving range is 340 km as per the WLTP certification protocol. It can sprint from 0 to 100 kmph in just 8.1 seconds. The three driving mode options include Sport, Normal, and Eco.
Since its launch in September 2019, the Peugeot has already received the orders for 1,30,000 units in Europe including 15% for the electric version.
Moving to the start of the winning list, Peugeot 504 won the award in 1969. The large sedan illustrated the rise of the middle-class models. It featured a four-wheel independent suspension system, the first Peugeot on a rear-wheel-drive system.
After almost two decades, the PEUGEOT 405 received this accolade in 1988 due to its aesthetic features, driving pleasure and comfort. It features a Mi16 version, a real benchmark at the time of launch, using 4-valve-per-cylinder system, the most efficient engine technology of that time, producing 160 PS of power.
Then after fourteen years, the Peugeot 307 begged the title as it represented a perfect balance in the new generation of compact, tall and spacious family cars available in the market.
In 2014, designers and engineers have come up with a modern hatchback with a racy design i.e. Peugeot 308. It featured the modular EMP2 platform, compact dimensions and a lighter mass which helped it in achieving driving dynamics and superb handling.
Later in 2017, Peugeot 3008 became the first-ever SUV to win this title since its creation in 1964. The SUV was noted for its sharp design, engaging driving dynamics and its comfortable and spacious cabin.
In this regard, Jean Philippe IMPARATO, Director of Peugeot, said, "Being in the top 3 of the most rewarded brands by the Car Of The Year award with six titles is a source of tremendous pride! PEUGEOT has won three COTY awards in 6 years, which is a first for a single brand! We now have three Peugeots designated "Car Of The Year" in the street: the new 208, the SUV 3008 and the 308 compact sedan. The new PEUGEOT 208 won because it offers the power to choose between its electric and combustion engines at an affordable price. Its daring design and technology draw you in.
