Peugeot unveils next-gen 208, includes an electric powertrain option
KUALA LUMPUR: Peugeot has unveiled the second generation 208 hatchback, redesigned from the ground up. The car is based on the CMP (Common Modular Platform) architecture which has been developed by the PSA Group to underpin cars of Peugeot, Citroën, and DS brands combinedly. Speaking of Peugeot 208, it has been designed having complete electrification in mind.
Design-wise, the all-new hatch takes some cues from its elder sibling, the new 508. The full LED headlights give the Peugeot 208 a better appeal. It gets a sharp and large six-point grille and a U-shaped air tank. Its nose is longer than the predecessor as the windscreen is positioned slightly at the back.
The car comes with a full-width glossy black panel at the rear that carries the three-claw designed tail lights. There are twin tailpipes and an optional diffuser. The GT Line and GT versions ride on 17-inch allow wheels having gloss black arches.
Under the hood, the car has three options - turbodiesel, petrol, and an all-electric powertrain. The 1.5-litre BlueHDi turbo-diesel engine offers a maximum power of 100 PS. The boosted 1.2-litre petrol option, on the other hand, is tuned to produce three different power output as 75 PS, 100 PS, and 130 PS.
As mentioned, the new-gen Peugeot 208 also comes with an electric-powered powertrain. It churns out 136 PS of power and the peak torque sticks at 260 Nm. It can provide a driving range between 340 to 450 km. It takes only five hours to refill the battery. Using the fast charger can charge 80% of the battery in just 30 minutes.
The cabin gets the manufacturer’s i-Cockpit design having low steering wheel placement and high-set instrument cluster. It has a touchscreen display that is available in five, seven, and 10-inch variants. Also, there is an optional holographic three-dimensional digital display.
