Next-gen Mini EVs may shift from FWD to RWD, report says

KUALA LUMPUR: BMW-owned Mini has been known for its compact, fun, front-wheel drive cars for a long time. The front-wheel drive platform is a defining characteristic of the Mini hatchbacks since the original model debuted in 1959. Well, it seems like a big shift is on the horizon.

Which brands will use the BMW Neue Klasse platform?
Next-generation BMW, Rolls-Royce, and Mini EVs will utilise the Neue Klasse platform, as per reports. When will this platform be introduced?
The next-gen iX3 electric SUV based on the new platform is expected to launch in 2025.As per the Autocar reports, the upcoming next-gen Mini EVs will be based on the BMW’s Neue Klasse platform; the one which supports only rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. No front-wheel drive option is available. This means Mini cars based on this new BMW underpinnings will likely be rear-wheel drive.

Every vehicle based on Neue Klasse will have an e-motor on the rear axle; however, AWD trims will get one additional motor on the front as well. The high-performance cars may even get three or four e-motors set up.
Well, BMW’s approach is quite different from its rivals as Volkswagen’s MEB platform, and Hyundai-Kia’s E-GMP platform support both FWD and RWD configurations.
FWD vs RWD
FWD platforms are typically cheaper to develop and allow for a more space-efficient design. It offers sharp handling, making the cars fun to drive.
However, RWD EVs come with their own set of benefits such as
- Batteries and motors will be positioned for improved balance, offering a better weight distribution -
- Sportier and more responsive drive
- Increase in range and charging speeds, claims BMW
As to shifting FWD Minis into RWD Minis, the automaker will have to face a few challenges such as retuning of the setup to retain their go-kart handling. Also, BMW will have to look for ways to keep these compact hatchbacks affordable in comparison to FWD EVs.

So, when will this shift happen?
As per the reports, there is still some time as the ongoing Cooper SE and Aceman EVs will remain in production until the late 2020s. These models are based on a front-wheel-drive platform co-developed with Great Wall Motors.
